A Warm Welcome..

OK, I'm 58, and have had a tank for around 6 weeks.
As a Newbie, I am Proud to state, having started knowing nothing at all, as of present, nothing has died! That was and still is my main goal!

I remember, as a kid, we had this great bowl, with Gold Fish, that was in the shape of a "Tumbler" glass. Around 30 litres. Rounded sides and bottom, with a "Black Moor," amongst others.. Then again, a couple of decades later, working on a 30m Prawn Trawler in the Kimberleys' (WA) and the Gulf of Carpentaria, (NT) we set up a salt water tank (aquarium,) on the back deck with Octopii, Prawns, Crabs, Dog sharks.. etc. Loved it, though the Crabs ate most things..

Then a cople of months ago, whilst back in China, I saw this..
And I knew I wanted a Fish Tank, with a Pond in our back yard as the ultimate goal.

6 weeks later, I have a 38litre, (10g) tank, with 1 Betta, 7 neons and 2 corydoras. At present 2 Canister Filters. as I added a Fluval 106, to the cheap SunSun Copy, and kept that circulating to keep that bacteria from the recent cycle. Will keep both running, for when I start up my other tank and then feed that into my new tank..

Sure enough, Yes, I have been stepped on numerous times, by Other Fish Forum "experts." ! Some harshly, about my eclectic collection, and the rules of doing this, and placing that fish with that fish.. I wonder how one can immediately gain a degree in Fish keeping without keeping fish? (OK, research research,, but)

In other forums, over the past 6 weeks, I have come accross the most obnoxious of people. I attempted to explain.. A somewhat knowledgeable salesperson in a pet shop tells me something, it makes sense, though when I disclose that information in a "fish forum," I am informed that I am committing animal cruelty etc etc. It is enough to turn myself off the "ask questions for help" side of fish keeping, or even fish keeping total. How does one start out in this hobby as an expert?

I now know, but I did not then. That is, start learning and reading about fish around 12 months before you become interested in keeping fish? Then you will know all that you are supposed to know, and do not take the advice of the friendly pet Shop employee that clearly has a passion for "fish." No, just read what forums members tell you, especially those with lots and lots of posts, and above all, DO NOT disagree with them!

Well. that at least has been my introduction in the past couple of weeks to Fish Keeping and Fish Forums.

Yes, I have made innocent mistakes.

Today I picked up my 200litre. (roughly 50g ) tank and I am going to make it from there. Mistakes, advice and all. I read the larger tanks are easier to look after, but until I am told by a forum expert, perhaps I will reserve that opinion.

I apologise for my somewhat sarcastic "First Post" for it has no relevence to the members of THIS Forum, or This Forum, what so ever. It is just a dialogue of a Newbie's experience to gain a foothold into this wonderfully beautiful and incredibly satisfying passion/hobby and the pitfalls that I have come accross.

I hope you enjoyed the video of the Koi Pond. We visit this restaurant annually, and I always look forward to being greeted by the big yellow fella!!.

I look forward to being a productive member of this forum.

Welcome! c: That koi video was very interesting.

It's a fact that the larger the tank, the easier it is to maintain water parameters.

Simple science really, in a small volume of water the amount of ammonia, nitrite or nitrate doe not have to be much at all to cause fluctuations.
Whereby in a larger volume of water the same amount of ammonia, nitrite or nitrate will be barely negliable as there is a lot more water to dilute the toxins. Larger water volume is a lot more forgiving when it comes to mistakes.

Simples :)

We ALL have made mistake whether as newbies or as experienced keepers, I have certainly made my fair share of them over the years, but I have always strived to learn from these mistakes and try not to make the same mistake twice and try passing on what I have learned to others who may have asked or querying things with relevance with what I have experienced with my tanks and fish.

When it comes to fishkeeping, anyone who considers themselves an 'expert' is not, imho, an expert at all. Just someone who holds themselves in very high esteem with little knowledge.

They may know of some things but sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. So it pays dividends to research and ask advice from as many experienced keepers from all walks of life to get a sort of educated idea of what you should do.

There are a number of invaluable advice given by a number of our members and hope everyone can benefit from those who give good advice.

Hope you enjoy the forum.

Welcome to the forum. I've gotten good advice and some negative. I also do research also on Google of course I'm not an expert but at least I know what I have to do now with my tanks and my fish and their well-being. Good luck and I hope you find some informative and advice

Planted tank you mean? and one of those people were me :)
we tried to help but you sarcastically went ballistic and got banned I presume. Please refrain from doing that on here. Many people you previously conversed with where experts and had degrees within the "fish" "section" of life. marine biologists, etc etc etc.
