it has gotten longer since the pic. have sucked a bunch out but it keeps coming back fast. only on the wood though. thats it. should i take the wood out?

Looks like black hair algae to me. How long have you had your tank set up? The piece of wood, was it fresh, cut from the tree or newly fallen? How did you clean it before placing it in the tank?

tank has been running for three years now. Soaked it in the big bath tub for three weeks. Used hot water every time i filled it. Branch was dry as a bone when i found it in the woods. Thru and thru. Was a huge branch i cut to size. Think it had been down two summers when i found it this spring. Stripped the bark off first Anything i should have done differently? I just did a half water change and took it out and scrubbed it down with a clean scour pad for doing dishes today. Fish dont seem bothered by it but dont eat it

There are a few good tips in this article:

I wouldn't recommend soaking the wood in a bleach solution, it could be too difficult to remove the chlorine again and cause more problems for your tank.
At one point I had some black hair growing on a few plants in my tanks, but ever since I started using Flourish Excel I haven't seen any more! :good:

Black Hair Algae love tanks with high Nitrates and low Co2, so I've read! It can hitchhike on new plants and infect your tank.

It's not that. It's like the white gunk taht grows out of other wood - it's to do with it being soaked etc. All you can do is keep removing it until it stops coming back.

Now that i think about it. It was white when it started and that was about a month after i put the wood in. Then about a month later or two later it started looking black

Yup, it's the gooey fungusy stuff that grows from the logs. Keep taking it off and it'll eventually go away.

It goes black as it fills up with detritus and algae.

cool. I was hoping it was something simple... Whew. Thanks for your help

Helpful Thread for me too!!!

I thought this was bba, and was starting to wonder why even spot dosing Excel would not kick it.

The wood in my tank also has the same markings from burrowing bugs B-)

made the decision to ditch my branch. Just too much too fast to keep up with... Maybe next time...

Edit: decided to to toss it in my goldfish pond abd see if it will quit. Much easier to clean it off out there

Although mine is much smaller, and from what it sounds not as bad, it is pretty easy for me to just use the edge of my siphon to scape it....then it sucks right out.

Flame moss is helping me out too...seems to be smothering it.:)
