A freind of mines pond is suffering from a large growth of weed that floats at the bottom of the pond. He has removed some, about the size of a football but the pond is still over run by it. He says it is very stringy, I think it may be blanket weed?
Before when the weed was lesser he used to see the fish but now never sees them.

Can anyone give any advice what to do, is this normal?

Cheers

Is the pond in direct sunlight? If so for how long each day? The best way to deal with Blanket is to remove as much as possible by hand and then add something like Barely Straw or a group of floating plants that will efficently compete with the weed for light and nutrients.

What do you think of the chemical stuff that you buy?

We tried it but soon as we finished the bottle ,it seems to be coming back.

Thats the problem with chemicals they do not correct the cause of the problem they simple cure/stop and if the problem is not corrected it simple returns after treatment. I always think it is best to aviod adding chemicals whenever possible to, it can affect the ponds natural system and while helping one problem it can cause many more. :)

Both very nice fish, tell your Dad to get both! I keep both species, Golden Rudd are a resonably small peaceful shoaling fish that are quite attractive and the Tench although they are mainly bottom dwellers will with time come to the surface to feed so you can see them more often, there are several colour variants including the Golden form and the natural Green.

Has anyone tried that electronic device for getting rid of blanket weed?

seems a bit of a con
It is important to have correct water conditions: nitrates and nitrites must be as low as possible
correct ph and all that seems like they want you to do all the work thatl solve the problem in the first place then add a device that does sfa
