We Love Peas!

For a second I thought that Betta was a dinosaur xD but anyways she looks amazing! :) I need one

 now everyone will look at him and think that!
Thanks, I think she's maybe got another week or so to go by then my java fern will have hopefully arrived. Is it ok to just float it or does it have to be tied down.

Mm, not sure, ^^ not a plant expert actually, I've never used real plants in my tank, I'm going to soon though, I need more coverage because my first platy, a Mickey Mouse Platy that I named Mau5, had her fry, but her, and the other fish ate all of them :c

Oh that's awful. I hope I have at least one or 2 survivors. I would love to see what they turn out like!

The color pattern on that "rainbow" platy is pretty much the identical color to a wild type platy. It is used to add specific colors to other platies and swordtails by first picking ones that are heavier in a particular color and then proceeding to isolate the desired color through multiple generations of selection.

Oh wow I didn't know that. There were 2 females the exact same so I got them both! I hadn't seen that colour before, just yellow and red so they stood out for me. Only problem now is I can't tell them apart but I think they are going to drop around the same time!
Thanks for that info. I can't wait to see what colour the babies turn out.

Oldman-are they actually called rainbow platy? I was on google looking for pictures of wild type platy and one came up exactly like mine but was called "rainbow platy" and when I googled that - they all look like my females. Is this the correct type for them or just man made name?
Thanks

I have no idea what the commercial fish suppliers are calling them these days. The popular names seem to change frequently so that they can keep right on selling them. Even the scientific names are often used to designate aquarium species instead of wilds, at least at my LFS, so that is another unreliable label. The true name of a fish with that basic appearance is Xiphophorus variatus, but as I said, I see that label on almost any color platy at my LFS.

Thanks for that. Yeah I seen a lot of "Xiphophorus variatus" on the description.
I also have another question if that's ok. It's about a male which I am hoping to get once he is out of quarantine. The store has put him aside for me. He isn't like any I have seen before-still in the same tank as assorted platy-he is silver with see through fins and 3 very clear spots on his side. Have you seen any like that before or could it be a new strain?
Thanks

It does sound different from the ones I have seen but I may have just not noticed them looking like that. I doubt you are seeing a "new" strain in a mixed batch of platies. Breeders are very careful to get their best price on any new strain until it becomes rather commonly available.

Thanks I will try and get a picture of him. I will be able to get him at earliest monday-I can't wait :D
