I'm looking to increase the circulation in the tank, I have been looking at wavemakers? Is this what people use in planted tanks to get the water circulation better?

I don't want the water sloshing arround, so I guess you just angle it down? Or am I on the wrong path here...

Thanks for help :)

Powerhead is what I'm looking for, but they say powerhead/wavemaker on ebay. Can you disable the wavemaker effect?

I'm not an expert on this subject on this topic, but are'nt wavemakers made for marine tanks to simulate the ocean?
I would use a powerhead. Something like this

See I'm sure it's a powerhead. But I have seen them in people fresh water tanks that look exactly the same as wavemakers?

Example from google:

Rather than the big blocky thing you linked.

They're wavemakers, they call it a powerhead because it moves water. The way the fans inside are arranged, creates turbulence, which is designed for the marine aquarium, but i can't see why you could'nt use one in a freshwater :good:
Be carefull with fish with long fins (like Bettas and Angelfish) as there is gaps and there tails could get shredded

I have a koralia evo 2800 in my 90 gallon african cichlid tank, to get rid of a few deadspots and help keep detritus suspended so the filters can pick it up. Also seems to have helped the vallis in the tank grow. I found it actually works best postioned in the corner, half way down the tank, pointed upwards. This way doesnt disturb the substrate and doesn't annoy bottom dwelling fish. Good bit of kit. Got mine from Surrey Pet Supplies, was the cheapest I could find.

Is this a constant jet of water? Or on/off, rotating like a wavemaker?

It's a constant jet. I think if you connect them to an external controller you get a wave effect. These kind of circulation pumps put out a wide cone of flow which is much more gentle than the narrow stream from a traditional powerhead, so plants tend to just wave gently rather than get blown away.

Ah cool, I knew people used them! So I wasn't going mad .

I will have a look into them, so you think this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Circulating-3000-L-H-Fish-Tank-Marine-Coral-Wave-Maker-Aquarium-Pump-Powerhead-/180850952232?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item2a1b8e8828

will only make waves if plugged into something? Ignore the fact of it being rubbish :p just for example. Cheers

yeah you'd need 2 of them facing opposite directions and then plug them in to something like this:

to get a back and forth wave action. It's more a thing for marine tanks though. The pump on it's own will just pump constantly. The cheapo ones can be really noisy and make the whole tank vibrate so best off with a decent make. The one I got has a magnet that goes on the outside of the tank to prevent the suction cup falling off and rubber pads built into the mount to stop vibrations.

That cheapo is a sunsun, I have some of the larger models and they work great.

Yeah its one of those you want, good for getting the flow round the plants. Angle it to compliment the flow from your current filter, lots of people put them at the opposite end to their inlet/outlet from their external and aim it slightly downwards as the flow will hit the opposite end of the tank then move down and back to the outlet.

Where have you been? Lol

+1 on koralias

I got a newave 1000 circulation pump from P@H yesterday. Its not too bad at all, very quiet and has variable speed 750lph-1400lph and It has a very powerful sat-nav style suction cup. It creates a nice flow in my 160l tank along with a fluval 306. Cost £23 I think but can be found cheaper online :good:
