Hello

i recently put in 2 large pieces of bog wood into a well established tank and it turned the water yellow. the fishes were all breathing from the top even though i did a 50% water change when i added the wood. so i did a water change n fishes were fine. but then about 6 hours later the water was back to yellow n they were breathing at the top again.

all other stats are fine, nitrates, temp ammonia etc alll read zero

any suggestions

Its the wood tanning the water.

Its completely harmless, i think although most people soak their wood first to stop this happening in their tank.

remove the wood you can either fit it in a pot and boil it to release the worse of the tannins or get a large bucket and leave them to soak change the water every 12 hours or every 24 . I boiled mine over night constantly changing the water i put it in the tank next day i still had some tannins but it cleared within 48hours

Good luck !

yeh its tanned the water and just looks nasty.

fishes seem like they have got used to it. so in a couple of days i will change the carbon in the filter and do a big water change. hopefully thats the last of the tanning.
