i have a fishtank in a room without ac, and it gets too hot on the summer for my fish. is there anything like an aquarium ac to cool it off?

There are aquarium chillers that you can buy on the market, but I'm curios to know just how hot does it get? So long as it avoids extremes (and I mean over 85F) you should be alright. Aswell, why not just decrease the heaters temperature a bit? Say it's at 78F, just drop it to 75F.

What I do is:
1. turn off the aquarium lights to avoid more heating
2. take off the lid (if you can and don't have jumping fish!) and put a ventilator above the tank ensuring you have enough surface movement.
3. use icecubes to cool down the water
4. remove the powerhead from the tank and replace by another type of filter such as an external or a hang on. I found that these powerheads increase the temperature of my tank with 2 - 3 degrees!

Good luck!

yeah it gets really hot. sometimes up to 90. yeah i took the heater, lid. i try putting ice but it only works for a while.

I have been suffering the same fate as yourself. I have turned my heater down to 24ºc. My room gets to 32ºc and my tank was 30.3ºc.

I also turned my lights off after they have been on for the 10 hours my plants need and opened the lid slightly. Be careful when opening the lid if you have fish that want to inspect the cleanliness of your floor.

You could also run a small fan that blows air across the surface of the water, this will also keep the tank a bit cooler but make sure the fan is not too close to the tank and is secure.

Ultimately, a tank cooler would be great and i would be interested to hear from anyone who has used one, but you could also try chilled water bottles and allow them to float about, but they are obviously only a way to get the temp down, not regulate it.

yeah it got very close to 90 degree :o . its a big tank n only has one fish ( 8" oscar.)

...

i was reading n a fan might b a good idea???

DO NOT USE ICECUBES they will do your fish harm if not kill them. The ice will cause a sudden change of temp, if only for a short while. Plus they are not dechlorinated. Ok maybe i was being a little bit dramatic but ice is not good for any fish.

Chill a few bottles of Budweiser and pop them in there, makes the tank look cool and saves you a trip to the fridge :)

All the other suggestions are fine.

Take a few used soda/water bottles and clean them thoroughly.
Fill them with water and freeze them.
When the temp is too high float one or two of them in the tank. If the temp gets too cold, the heater will kick in.
You can also place a fan to blow over the water surface.
It might cause evaporation so be sure to top the tank off.

hehe, this is funny.....

I use ice cubes all the time to simulate rain to help plecs to breed...

1 drop of dechlorinator on the cube, drop in tank.. no prblem with that..

It would take a hell of lot of ice to harm the fish, especially when i drop 20 cubes in and it dont even effect the temp much.

Hmmm.... i think we will have to agree to disagree on this one. Of course the larger the tank i suppose the less effect the ice will have but the area around the ice will be freezing and the ice i imagine would make the fish inquisitive and pop up for a look causing them to perhaps swim in water that is a diffeent temperature if only briefly. I'm not completely convinced myself.

I drop 20 in a 2ft tank..

The fish will swim near of course but soon as it feels the temp it moves away..

Its like us near a hot flame, too close and we bk off..

Think about when ppl throw in frozen food cubes, i seen many newbies do this and yet the fish still swims up and nibbles at it, personally i dont think ice does no harm unless you are really stupid and drop in like a freezers worth.

Fair enough, i can see your point.
