To be honest if I had known just how stressful it would be, I honestly know whether we would have had a tank at all. The 40litre tank belongs to my son, he's only 12 and just adores it. He waited 12 months to get it and now it's turned into a nightmare for him. Hopefully it will all work out in the end.

Thanks again, I'll let you know how we get on :D

I just calculated the tank size from the measurements & it is far bigger than 40 litre - more like 118 litres (31 US gallons or 26 proper gallons)
I'm wondering if the new cycle has been initiated by not enough dechlorinatoer being used?
EG dropping out 10% of the tanks depth & then adding dechlorinator for 4 litres rather than for 12 litres?

Hi Sue
I've just been up and measured the tank again (sorry, my mistake - I thought I had remembered the measurements - obviously not) the 40litres is correct but the measurements are 11.5inches wide, 12.5 inches high and 24 inches long.

I'm just about to start transferring the fish over into the bucket so wish me luck. I'm struggling to get the temperature below 29 on the big tank. It's been like that all day despite me turning the thermostat down on the heater by 2 notches at lunchtime and another 3 an hour ago. Hopefully it will start coming down shortly, otherwise I may have to put some more cold water in there to lower it manually.

When I've been previously doing the water changes I have had about 4 litres in a bucket and then added 1ml of Stress Coat to it before adding it to the tank. According to the bottle it should be 5ml for each 38l of water so I've been adding just under 10% to it. Should I have been adding enough for the full tank each time?

Hi

Just a quick update to say that all inabitants have safely been transferred over to large tank. Crikey how difficult are flipping Cory's to catch? I'm dreading trying to cacth them to move them back once the small tank has completed its cycle.

Anyway thanks for all the help. Hopefully everything will work out well in the end. Fshless cycling on small tank starts tomorrow :D

My two female panda corys were easy to catch, but the little boy took me ages lol, good luck.

I couldn't believe how quick they were. Everytime I went near them with the net, they suddenly appeared at the opposite end of the tank.

My little panda boy kept doing that, i hate catching tetra's they are really fast and jump.

Yeah I should imagine that Tetras are pretty nippy too. The cory's were hilarious, you no sooner think you've got them cornered and they just shoot out in all directions. They amuse me how they seem to watch you whereever you are, which is obvoiusly what they were doing when I was trying to sneak up on them. It's going to be an absolute nightmare when I come to swap them back over.

 You get better at catching them the more you do it, good luck.

I hope I don't have to do it too often. I was getting stressed over them getting stressed

Wilder;

Hi, sorry to leap in but I see that you're based in the U.K. Can I ask; Where do you get your Ammonia from? You seem to know a lot about fishless cycling and I, for one, am having a hell of a job finding 'pure' Ammonia that I can use.

Any advice?

Cheers,

DB

Jeyes pure ammona, boots or hardware store.

Hi

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I bought my Ammonia from Homebase. Just says "household ammonia" on the bottle. I read on here a while ago that Homebase was pretty reliable for stocking pure ammonia without any additives in it. Hope this is useful for you.

Jue :)
