Water Stats

Some of you may know I brought a seccond hand tank not so long ago.

I've totally gutted the tank, adding a new 3D background, new gravel and turned it from 100% fake plants and wood to 100% real plants and soon to add wood .

I've just tested my water and this is what I've got:

pH - 7.5
NitrAte - 5
Ammonia - 0
NitrIte - 0.1

Test was done using a Nutrafin Essential Mini Master Test Kit for Fresh Water.

The tank has 2 Angel Fish, 2 Sword Tails, 3 Tetra, 5 Rosebarb, 4 Guppy, 3 Dannio, 1 Platy.

Just wondering if anything is too high, or if it goes above ?? then how much of the water to change.

It's a Juwel Trigon 190.

water seems fine but the nitrIte should really be zero too.

dont worry about Nitrate, your weekly water changes will keep it low. mine hangs around 60. Not much i can do about it when its 50 out of the tap. I do a 50% water change every Saturday.

Do a 25% change tonight and test it at the same time tomorrow, that 0.1 nitrIte might disappear.

edit: I presume the filter is cycled and all that jazz?

Yup the tank has been running nearly 2 years, just didn't know how much of this good bactira I might have lost by changing everything apart from the filter . I know the filter is the main holder, just thought I'd make sure though.

Yep pretty much mate

Its relatively safe when under 0.25ppm, when i fish in cycle i always aim to keep it below that but of course its near impossible to predict any long term issues it might have. 1 out of 20 tigers i used to cycle my 90L snuffed it a month down the line, no idea why but could have been caused by the fish in cycle, hard to tell. I might have killed it with my poor sense if humour mind!

Sorry for your loss . Love those Tiger Barbs... I've seen your tank! I've wanted a group of them but didn't have the tank space, and now I do I'm still un-sure on behavour etc... but they are great looking fish!

the filter holds 99.99% and what you lose through changing should bounce back pretty quickly.

sometimes the nitrite might creep up if you give your filter a thorough clean. is this the case?

i would be wary of the nitrite spiking though, as it can happen quickly and is more toxic than ammonia to the fish

I took all the filter sponges out and put them in another tank that I had running to hold all my fish while I fitted a 3D Background to the tank.

I didn't clean the inside of the filter with anything, all I cleaned was the glass for fitting the background. But I used old tank water to clean it .

I will keep my eye on the stats by testing daily till things settle
