in my tank which is housing a betta and a few other fish, i have my filter on the lowest power setting, and i feel like the water isnt oxygenating enough as all the fish seem to rest at the top of te tank in the evening, would it be okay if i upped the power a little, just dont want to harm the betta as i know they dont like a current, and i always feel it looks as if he's struggling when swimming against a sall ish current

It's not gonna hurt anything to try it. also, do you have your filter outlet point up towards the surface of the water? An air stone will disturb the surface more but depending on where you put it can influence the current too.

I figure if the current is really bothering them they can avoid the areas with the strongest flow :/

yeah i guess it wont hurt to try :) i do have it pointing to the surface yes :) but because its quite low in the tank it doesnt really disturb the surface much i guess i could easily solve that by putting my filter closer to the surface though :p

In my own tanks the betta either learns to swim or gets out of the main filter flow path. You might be surprised to see how many choose to learn to swim. I presently have my nice veil tailed male in my 45 gallon endler tank. He does not avoid the filter flow at all. He thinks he is in heaven with all that room to swim around in and newborn endlers to eat at will. He is not a very efficient carnivore but I am sure eats a few.
