Hullo. I have a betta that is getting over being sick.

I treated him for 5 days with Maracyn Two and his pop-eye has all but gone away and his apatite is returning to normal. Yay!

Buuut I just did a water change, about 25% and his water is still murky. He has a 2.5 gallon tank, no filter and a heater. There little bits of stuff floating around, I tried to scoop out most of them when I was changing the water. Then I treated the new water I was putting in with conditioner.

Is it OK that the water is cloudy? Normally I do a 100% water change but I am being advised against that.

Hmm sound like bacterial bloom im gettin this with my new tank setup at the moment trying to cycle it. I imagine yours is re-cycling because you've killed off the benificial bacteria ether with the meds or changing to much water. id keep an eye on your water for a week or two with a test kit.

Alas, I am a broke college student and cannot afford a test kit. Could it just be from his medicine?

Also, there was a flim developing on the top of his water which got stirred up, which was also from the medicine I believe.

Anything to worry about?

Regular water changes should sort it out. No reason you can't do 25% per day until the problem is solved. As long as it doesn't stress your Betta.
It could indeed be a bloom of algae or bacteria, water changes will sort that out too by removing the excess nutrients they thrive on.

Okie doke. Thanks. I think the cloudy-ness is just from not being able to change his water for 5 days due to his medicine.

I'm running out and getting another 2.5 gallon for Black Beard the Betta's girlfriend. She is a recent Wal-mart rescue and is VERY active.

Yeah, just as long as you keep doing some water changes daily it should be ok. ;)

It's been over a week, and there is still this weird film that develops on the surface of my betta's tank. I have been doing daily water changes, but it just keeps forming...

grrrrr any ideas?

Try a small filter and aim the current against the side of the tank to reduce the current.
Water quality and filtration are the key to success in my opinion.

good luck. :good:

I had the same problem in my Fluval 260L tank. The way we combatted the problem was to "Hoover" the substrate with the syphon system. You will be AMAZED at how much reside from the treatment sinks through the sand/stones. Also unplug the filter and change or WASH OUT the sponges/carbon/ammonia filter depending on what filter you have. I don't buy replacement sponges, I just boil wash them and it cures all cloudiness. I agree it could be bacterial bloom, but give this a go. It worked for me - good luck

I had to clean 3 of my tanks today there was like a film on top of the tanks but the bettas were fine underneath  really dont know why!
