I've had Alfie almost a week now, and he's still alive! :hyper:

I've been doing frequent partial water changes, because it's an un-cycled tank. I'm testing the water every day, and all seems ok :good:

My question is, once the tank's established, how often should I do partial water changes? And how much water should be changed?
It's a 5 gallon tank.

Many thankingnesses,
Dee :)

Hi Deefus
We have 2 x 6 gallon tanks and do about 50% weekly. They are filtered by sponge filters only and this water change seems to be adequate :good:

I would change about 1/3 to 1/2 each week.
Quite often if there is only 1 fish in the tank you can do water changes once every few weeks. You should monitor the nitrates and if they start going up rapidly then do more water changes. If the nitrates stay low you can do water changes less often.

Thanks guys :good:

I do monitor nitrate levels, along with the other stuff.
Mine's a sponge filter, so around 50% per week should be ok then? Cooel! :)

While we're on the subject of filters..
I know the filter sponge must only be rinsed in old tank water, but how often?

Dee :)
