I don't know if I'm doing it the best way currently.

The tank is sort of torso height on a stand. It's only a 45L so no biggie.
Currently I use a bottom cleaner/syphon unit which I syphone out into a big bucket on a nearby surface.
Filling up is a bit more difficult.. I've been standing the new water on a chair, on the surface, and syphoning (well, struggling!) back into the tank. Usually ends up with me having to pour or jug the last few litre's in by hand.

Is there a better method?

Disturbing the sand jug loading annoys me that's all.

I had this problem too. What I did was make a DIY python using a guide on this website: http://www.fishforum...-python-system/

I didn't use a powerhead or anything, just used the shower connector for my taps then connected a hose to it to put water back into my fish tank. You can just aim the hose at the glass of the tank to prevent the sand being disturbed.

If you are still using the jug, submerge it in the water before pouring it out, just let the new water kind of merge in with the old so to speak, you get less turbulence that way also the water is more likely to match the same temperature.

Am i right in thinking...you said the tank was 45 litres? So a weekly water change at 25% is 11 litres??? If you got a bucket and "jugged "it in, its gonna take you no more than 30 seconds..... A python is for much larger tanks, by the time youve set it up, you could have finished the WC cleaned up and made a brew...... Haha

Mines only 46L and I use a python. It's impossible for me to pour water into the tank without scattering sand everywhere plus water gets all over the furniture lol, much less mess with a python :).

:good: ill stick to buckets n jugs, i quite enjoy all the faffing around, part of the hobby, and i think if i work hard at a hobby i get more pleasure in it.....

My siphon unit, I disconnected the short plastic hose it comes with and my garden hose attaches perfectly. I run it straight outside, so no more lugging buckets. Then I just reattach the end to the tap and fill the tank back up through the hose - again, no lugging buckets!

For years I used to do it the long way with buckets and I'm kicking myself i never started using the garden hose sooner.
