oh 5 gallons is big for just one little betta! great size!

how much of a water change are you doing? 10%, 20%, 30%, 50%, 100% on a daily or bi-daily basis?

a member from here does 100% water changes weekly and about 20% every day.

i guess the next important piece of info is if you have a filter or non-filter tank?

with a cycled filtered tank, i would probably do 30-50% water changes weekly and then a 100% water change once a month.

No filter and i change 100% of the water. I take the betta out of the tank and put it in the small bowl it came in and then i wash the tank. After i put it back on the tank.

I have a 5 gallon with one female in I do about 25% water changes 3 times a week. I have live plants which help with the ammonia and nitrate so I don't have to do 100% water changes. If you cycle your tank and do a 100% water change there is a good chance you will have cycle it all over again unless you keep the good bacteria alive in your filter to use it as a jump start to the cycle. Remember to keep an eye for ammonia, that is one of the hardest things on a fishes health.
