I am looking to get a gravel cleaner/syphon thing that doesnt remove any water - Like this one on drsfosterandsmith.com. I would get one, but they don't ship to canada. Does anyone know of a chain store that sells them? Or know of a DIY way to do it?

Thanks in advance

All it does is take the poop and food debris off the bottom of the tank. Since I have sand, It is very noticable. I do water changes every other week, but i would like to get rid of the yucky stuff more often

that is the coolest thing i have ever seen! i want one! lol

and i hear ya about the sand. looks horrible!

luckly my sand has black bits, so it doesnt look horrid or anything, i just want to be able to remove it

Hi there!

I couldn't get on with a regular gravel cleaner/water changer - kept forgetting to keep an eye on the bucket and watering my carpet! So I'm buying this powered one http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/listsecti...tp=148&rets=212 as soon as payday rolls up. So if you want to wait a couple of weeks you can get a product review!

Aquatics-online.co.uk do deliver internationally, but i don't know how much it would cost. They also do another model, but it is quite expensive http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/listsecti...tp=148&rets=212

Let me know if you want a consumer report!

Hi canoechiq :)

I don't understand why you want to keep water in your tank for up to two weeks. :dunno: It is so much more healthy to do regular water changes. For a fully stocked tank, this means it should be done weekly or even more frequently.

Most people take advantage of the water changing to clean the bottom, not the other way around.

The easiest way to keep a tank healthy is to add lots of clean and fresh water on a regular basis. If you are thinking that this will wash away the beneficial bacteria, you do not have to worry about it. It is much harder to get rid of them than that, but the disease causing bacteria will be greatly reduced. :D

get some scavenger fish like catfish of coryies.

i've never had to clean the sand in my last tank. and dirt only adds to the effect in my opinion

I personally don't do a weekly water change :)
Instead I just hoover the poop off the sand every two days with a syphon and just replace the water that is removed.
This way the sand looks clean all the time and I only have to replace about 10 litres of water (one bucket) instead of the 25 litres (two buckets) that would be needed with a weekly water change.
As i'm only replacing 10 litres there's no need to pre-warm the water and the filter is never turned off (if I do a big water change I need to turn the powerheads off so they don't run dry when the water level drops).
All in all it's less stress for everyone, me and the fish, and my water quality stays perfect :D

(This applies to my 30g, I haven't needed to hoover the sand in my 56g yet so not sure what i'm going to do with that one)
