WIth all respect, could you Please clarify this a little more? I'm not very good at Internet shorthand...and I, too, am looking for an easier way to clean my tank.

Thanks. -Wendy :D :D :D

I am thinking about getting a python, too, but 2 things concern me--maintaining wATER TEMP (WHICH I've really been doing okay with faucet) and how do you dechlorinate the water before it hits the tank--although it sounds so convenient to hose right into tank??? Thanks. Wendy :) :) :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish:

I got a 50 foot python and for a water change it is pretty good, bit fiddly to set up first time working out where and how it connects, once done it is pretty good at emptying the tank with the bonus that it has a gravel cleaner on the end already so you can do a 25% water change and a 25% gravel clean at the same time.

Getting water back in I have the same concerns so I turn off my filters, refill the tank and then treat the water by pouring the treatment into the water as it flows into the tank from the Python, it would be real nice if the Python people devised a dosing station though, one up to the appropriate level I turn on the filters again.

I also have problems with temperature and even using a mixer tap it is a bit hit and miss.

A freind of mine came up with a 'kind of' solution that uses the python to fill an 80 litre container by the tank that can be treated and heated prior to the water change, then use a pump from the treated container to the tank using either syphon or a pump (I don't fancy the syphon .. 10 gallons of water 4 or more feet off the ground) but I may investigate this.

But for getting the water out of the tank without mess or fuss it is a breeze, if you can live with adjusting the temperature and treating water yourself at the tank then so is filling ... as for the DIY solutions well to each their own, I'm afraid I can't be bothered wasting time on making something I can get off the shelf and I don't accept that DIY is always cheaper, even the time it takes to make has a value.

not sure those with water meters would agree though it does seem to use a lot of water.

Pythons are a great time & back saver. Water temp is really no problem, if you are off by a few degrees it doesn't bother the fish, cooler water changes are a common trick used to induce spawning. If you do a 25% water change, and the temp of the water you are adding is off by 4 degrees, you have just changed the tank temp 1 degree. Fish in the wild deal with this sort of thing every time it rains, or on a hot, sunny, rainless day.

I fill my tanks with a hose, and add dechlorinator before, during, or after filling. I've never seen any difference with a variety of fish.

To be honest, I think the best thing to do is to get a power gravel cleaner. They are electrical and work extremely well, but they do not take the water out of your tank for you. THey filter all the crap out, and put the water directly back into your tank. You will need something else to do a water change, but for the best gravel cleaning search for "power gravelcleaners" on eBay. Its worth it, especially for a tank your size.

:p :shout: There ya go Wendy ;) Now, where is my txt2English dictionary :p

Speaking of which, I just ordered all the connectors to make a python... Cost me roughly £5 (from eBay) and I plan to use a £1.99 kit used for under-gravel filters bought at MA (a quick link uplift kit... has everything to make a nice little gravel vacuum...)
