Washing Filter Wool- Chemicals To Use

Hi All

Im trying to find out what chemical I can use to wash my filter wool with when I throw all my filter wool in the washing machine.

I guy I used to know washes his wool with chlorine (I think) and then adds a another chemical to neatralize the chlorine.... Any suggestion?

filter wool is so cheap why not just throw your old away and replace with new ?? or am i thinking of a different wool ?

I probably didnt explain my situation properly.

With running 48 plus tanks, Im adding filter wool before it goes into the sump filter. Just to catch any crap before it goes into sump. This has to get replaced morning and night.

After 1 week of dirty filter wool, throw all the dirty filter wool into the washing machine to wash them and reuse them.

As its only for mechanical filtration I would use no additive wash once then add dechlor and wash again. The chlorine in your tap water should kill the odour causing bacteria but I doubt you want the wet wool to be laden with the chlorine if its then going straight into you filter hence the second wash with dechlor.

I wouldn't wash it with anything but water,I know your talking about a charge more than I run in my little 303 canister filter but I rinse mine every 3-4 weeks by hand in the sink in about 30 seconds,so after a cycle in a machine with just plain water it will be plenty clean.It's not like you'll be wearing it out to dinner your just trying to rinse the gunk off,and that certainly doesn't require soaps or chemicals.Soaps and chemicals are only more work to run the risk of poisoning your tanks.

Just buy the cheapest polyester pillow stuffing you can for floss. WalMart sells a large bag for a few dollars, you can rinse it a few times to get rid of any particles of debris, then toss it.
