Sorry but it all seems doom and gloom, they always seem to die and not very old.
It's it worth getting one or just heart break, as it puts me off getting one.

They're great if you can find a healthy one. Pet shop ones are usually traumatized and weak, but most are healthy eanough to do well in new homes if there isn't too much shock. Try feeding some bloodworms when they come home, keep water warm and provide the betta with plenty of plants and slow current, should help. Have you tried a female? Maybe you'll have better luck :)

No haven't tryed either yet, was thinking of getting females as I want some guppys also but said it could be problem, they would of gone in the 30 gallon.
I have a 12 gallon tank with only three panda corys in it had them two years, but abit scared of adding something and wiping them out, but thinking of a male betta with the corys.

Ok thanks, is more the better for aggression so it spreads out.

i had both a male an dfemale though i never bred them i found them easy to care for and the male lived 5 years and female lived 3 so i love bettas so i hope u have luck with yours. sadly mine just recently died so i got a new male. its sad but i new it would happen eventually. fish die and ive got used to the fact. just keep trying!

Life span is a bit variable really, some of mine havent lived very long  others are still going strong. It is upsetting when they die though. They do give me a lot of pleasure though

Wilder I must say that you will absolutely fall in love with a betta if you decide to buy one. They are majestic to watch and have the most adorable little personalities. You may also find yourself at work wishing you had a webcam to watch your little baby from your office..

...Or maybe this is just me being dangerously addicted. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone

Consider yourself warned.

They're amazing fish! And beyond addicting lol. Yes it's heartbreaking when they die, but I feel that being able to have these incredible fish even for a shory while is well worth the heartache they can cause.

I love my bettas and think you should get one as well :) One example of why I like them is so much as I put new plants or work on my community tank with my Platies and all they do is go over, look at it for like twenty seconds, realise it's not food and it's not feeding them, and they forget about it. My bettas on the other hand, like to investigate every last inch of whatever I put in their tank, and sometimes actually seem to appreciate it!

They have got fantastic quirks. Even my little girls are fun. I miss my fancy goldfish and keep thinking of replacing him, but all he ever thought about was food...bettas are different. I have had some from lfs that have died in a space of months. One of mine is poorly now.. Spurs..I have tried meds but to no avail...and if they are ill(not a in sudden unexplained death) they are such little fighters they dont give up on life easily.

I have never successfully put new fish in a tank that has established fish in(in ones that have been by themselves years) it doesnt work for me.
sorry for the ramble that wasnt a lot of help was it? :good:

I say get one.
Even if they do die within months... at least you know you gave them the best life they ever had.
They're the greatest fish with such wonderful personalities.
I'd suggest putting the tank where you'll be able to watch it often.. like on your computer desk. That way you can really appreciate them better and they get to know you as well :D

Definately get one Wilder. I recently put my boys in the kitchen, http://www.fishforums.net/Setting-Up-A-Use...nk-t193017.html, and I'm so glad I did. Whenever I come home (I live in an apartment so the kitchen is right next to the front door) they're doing their little "hello mommy" wiggle dance, and if I set down anything in front of their tank, they swim down to see what it is. And their little faces are so cute, they're like little fishy bulldogs. Even if they don't live long, they are worth every minute.

The way I even aquired a betta is I was at walmart and saw poor Tatsu in a bowl smaller than a coke can. It made me so sad that I had to get him. He's my first betta and I agree that it is worth every single second. He's like a little kid, and I spoil him like one. He's the sweetest little fish with my cories, unless they touch his glass river rock thingy, then he'll chase them around the other side, turn back, and then play with the blue rock thingy(he pushes it around and stuff). They are the best fish imo, for anyone who loves things that love them back!

i never thought about a betta before but after reading so many warm happy posts about them im getting very tempted. they are obviously a very lovable speacial fish :)
