to all newbies, (like me)
DO NOT put snails in your tank unless:
you have a reliable snail eater
or you are 100% informed about the species you choose.

story:
i have 1 ramshorn.
5 days later... lays eggs
next day...
find 16!?!? clumps of eggs!!!!!!

snail is now going.
just warning you that snails are extremely deceptive little buggers

be warned, :good:
iain

You wont have snail issues as long as there is no decaying matter in the tank for them to feed on, this is generally uneaten fish food.

Why did you buy a Ramshorn in the first place!(Or did it come in a plant, this is very common) They are generally regarded as pests unless you want something to eat up your plants and breed like crazy

Always get rid of them asap otherwise an infestation of snails will consume your tank in weeks. Good luck in trying to eradicate them anyways :)

This really isn't true, as I previously explained, tanks with excess food festering in them will have snail problems if snails are present, as the food is there for them.

+1 for not overfeeding

also assassin snails often help to keep problems limited + apple snails are good for clearing up any left overs before problem snails get to them

Nothing wrong with snails, they provide additional biological cleaning for your tank at essentially no cost. And if you squish a few now and again your fish/shrimp will greatly enjoy the snack

I remember seeing a picture of a tank, it may of been on here, when i first started fis keeping. It was of a tank that had been consumed by snails, hundreds of them. Seeing that was enough for me to stay away

I had dalmation mollies that absolutely loved snails so I could get all the plants I wanted without fear of infestation. Just make sure if you go that route that you get only females, otherwise you will end up with a ton of baby mollies. I used to breed them, among other fish, so that wasn't a problem for me.. I had plenty of tanks :)

Getting females only can still lead to fry, since many livebearers are pregnant when you buy them...

I love my snails. Ramshorns MTS pond snails bladder snails... I don't run a tank without snails. I have no snail eaters. I have no problems with out of control snails. Because as others have said everything happens for a reason.

You give me a snail free tank I will throw a bunch of 'pest' snails in it.
