Just thought I'd share the following, as we've had a good deal of (justified) complaints about big chain stores. I was never going to get anything from my local pets@home, but had to rush there in desperation as my platy fell ill yesterday and there is no way I can get to my smaller family-run shop on a weekday. I came rushing in at 5.30, all out of breath, and found a WONDERFUL young man, who listened carefully to the symptoms, clearly knew a LOT and took me through all I needed to know about the illness (finrot) and found me medication. Ok, so I've still got problems with other employees at the same store, but I will be more understanding in the future- obviously you can't always get staff of that calibre and it takes time to train new staff.

Just wanted to say, take heart all of you who work in pet stores, your efforts will be noticed by grateful customers and you do make such a big difference! :)

I agree there are a few gems out there.

Just a shame there aren't more of them!

How refreshing to hear a happy tale about these type of stores rather than all the usual flaming and bashing that goes on.

thank you  .

yeah if we gonna bash the bad stores, on here we should also tkae the time to praise the good ones!!!

Well, don't know if we have entered a 'new age' for these stores, but after reading dwarfs post, I felt I should add that our local P@H has recently improved too.

The fish look healthier, the tanks cleaner, the layout better and they appeared to have someone full time working in the fish section.

Heres to hoping!

Note: I didn't say it was a brilliant shop in itself, it was more a case of feeling I need to set the record straight as I have grumbled loudly about the same shop in the last few weeks. Basically, a shop is only as good as the people who work there, and they seem to be quite a mixed bunch. It was in the same shop that an employee told me that it was a good thing for the fish to eat their dead companions as this is natural behaviour (never mind about spreading infection).

Don't tell us, tell the store!

It's only by positive feedback to the management of these companies that they will see it as benificial to ensure all their staff are this helpful & knowledgable.

Write to the manager of the store and explain your positive experience, make sure you name the young man if you can and also mention that you've told others in your 'fishkeeper's club' about how helpful he was.

Lay it on thick!

Thanks for the positive story, Dwarfgourami.

It's nice to hear that, like a moment of sun on a rainy day.

Congrats as well to the pets@home employee.

If your in Southampton, try looking at Creature Comforts in Totton, next door to Asda, looks are decieving, the place has a huge stock.

Agreed.

I'm lucky to have a really good fish dept. in my local Petco (chain in the US). The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and do a brilliant job keeping the fish.
