Hi There,

Think this may be my first post on the forum (been regesterd a while and have just been browsing the forum)

Anyway, ive just purchased a new 20gallon tank and have it all set up... now, i have 4 gold fish in my old tank which i want to move to my new tank, but im now debating on the idea of getting some tropical fish also.

Would i be able to mix the gold fish with tropical fish.... yes i know that gold fish are cold water and tropical fish are warm water.... i tried a search on google and it came up with mixed results.... more or less 50/50 yes and no... so im confused.... can i put the gold fish in with tropical fish?

I know i would have to get the gold fish used to the water (gradually raising the temp)

I will be putting pictures of the tank setup shortly once i get some plant life in there, aswell as a nice little rockery.

Many thanks

James

you can put goldfish in with tropicals but it shortens their lifespan and weakens there immune system

I would say no , am no expert by far , though a family member decided to add his 2 large goldfish into his tropical tank , they were way overactive swiming around constantly like there fins had been burnt ...

He has since took them out and back into a coldwater tank

Yep keeping goldies in warm water speeds up there metabolisim which shortens their life span. The high temps make them more suseptiable to disease.

So yea you can, but it will more then likley kill them... think ill keep it cold then.... Cheers for your help...

Looks like you already decided against it, but another consideration is their diet. There's a reason that there's separate foods for goldfish and tropicals, and it would be hard to get all the fish their appropriate feeding. Also, goldfish potentially get bigger than a good many tropical community fish, and you're likely to start seeing small tankmates disappear eventually.

lol everybody has forgotten 2 tell u aswell goldfish grow very big 2 so 20 gallon wont be big enough for them in the long run and they also produce alot of waste so majorly over filtering is a big must

yeah forgot to mention that!

The rule for goldfish is 20g for the 1st goldfish then an extra 10 for another etc. so for 4 you will need a 50g

I was looking at getting one of them external filters, but wasnt too sure how you get everything into the tank. I see some people have a hole in the bottom of the tank, which the external filters then come in through there... but where do you get that done at?

people keep butterfly plecs in coldwater setups

but you can only keep 1 goldfish in a 20 gallon as they are massive waste producers, you could probably get away with 2 if you were overfiltered

there is a couple of fish tanks that i have seen with plecs and goldfish in i beleive u just heat the tank up to about 22-24c

NO! i mean where did that anwser come from lol y a plec with g/f was it because of they are big waste producers? if so they wont eat waste/etc?

was just curious y u sugested a plec lol :p

may well do but it prefers warmer waters!!! so its not ok 2 keep coldwter fish in a tropical setup but it's ok 2 keep tropical fish in coldwater setup? hmmm bit confused now lol oh well prob just me :)

lol just suggesting a fish to keep with them i think there is only a few plecs that are ok in colder water but they are the same as goldfish in tropical tanks they survive but do better in there own prefered set up
