Walmart Mystery Barbs

Hey everyone, i hope all is well.

Today i picked up 7 tiger barbs from walmart. I know walmart fish are terrible but i felt bad for them and they were so cheap and i was planning on buying some tigers to breed, but the first store i checked only had albinos so i tried walmart instead and they had what i wanted. Anyway, they certainly look like tiger barbs, but they do have some shiny green colouration on their stripes. I know there is a strain of tigers out there that are fully green (moss barbs), so i was wondering if these fish of mine are like a genetic combination of wildtype tigers and moss tigers, or if there is a little bit of green in their natural colouration. I dont have a picture, and even in the picture i dont really think the green would show up. Its quite minimal, and only shows up in certain lighting. Im sure some experienced barb owner knows what i mean. thanks a lot!!!

They could possibly be. If you can get a good picture of them, someone on the forum should be able to ID them for you. I would quarantine them before adding them with you other fish. Also, they do look somewhat healthy, and i felt good for "rescuing" them haha

I wish i could have rescued all the fish I saw today. those poor parrots.....they need to be euthanized...I am glad you were able to get some healthy barbs. I am sure they are very greatful to you as well

And im afraid i dont have a camera so cant get you a picture, but when i say the green pigmentation is minimal i mean MINIMAL. You can only discern a little bit of green sparkliness of their stripes if you look veryyy closely. I feel like there must be some natural green in their scales, for the green strain to exist, as green isnt a yes or no kind of trait, but rather an extent kind of thing.

Could it be the lighting giving them that look? If not, then they are possibly crossbred

Wild type Tiger Barb's black stripes do have a slight greenish sheen to them.

Tigers get that metallic green shimmer when they are bickering for dominance in the social group. Will die down when social structure is sorted.

Thats so interesting!!!! i thought perhaps it was a genetic mutation, and walmart just got stuck with the cheap impure ones. That makes sense though, cuz today i bought a female from a fish store and she was all alone, and had no green shine at all.
