Hey all,
I will make this quick. I have been contemplating breeding my VT male betta with my DT female betta. I am well aware of how to breed them and I have a great relationship with the manager at my lfs who gladly buys fish off of me. My question is what kind of fry would result from this mix? Which gene if either is dominant? Any input from someone who has had experience in breeding these two is much appreciated. Thank you.

lol, not to intrude on your topic or anything but too bad it wouldn't be a DVT(Double veiltail) lol.... be pretty neat..

No worries my friend :good: I think a DVT (if such a thing exists lol) would be spectacular looking. Just curious as to what would happen with a VTxDT? Where is Cracker when you need him

lol... Never know, you could be the first to discover it.  **looks for cracker** as he countsdown...

Oh no, DTVTs DO exist. I have a female. You'd get mostly veiltails, but mixed in with some DTVTS.

hello everyone i hope you will ask me questions and answer my questions

Really? Interesting to know. Can anyone confirm what the fry would be? A mix as K.J. mentioned? Thanks K.J. for the input.

Chances are most will be VT, but there will be the chance they're genotypes. There are some interesting spawn logs around if you haven't read any yet, just search "spawn" in the bettas forum under topic title.

Thanks K.J. I will take a look at some of the spawning logs. I will keep my own log and let everyone know what the results are from this mix. Thanks to all who replied.

Edit- Horrible grammar

I've heard that even when you mix dt x dt you don't get many dt's because they're hard to breed.
I think you'll get a lot of vt's, maybe some with bad dt splits (vt's with a split up their tail), and maybe a couple of dt's, and some dtvt's...
although I'm no expert...

What tailtype is the DT female? DTVT, DTHM, DTPK? It doesn't really matter for the F1, but if she's DTPK it will in F2. If the male carries DT (which isn't likely, I'm afraid), you'll get about 50% DTVTs and 50% VTs that carry DT. If not, you'll get all VTs that carry DT.

DTVTs do exist, I've seen them in pet stores. The males are actually pretty ugly, IMO, lol.

Breeding DT x DT will give you all DTs, but it's generally a big no-no because it often results in many deformities. DTs aren't any more difficult to breed than the STs of their tailtype.

Hi lisie,
Thanks for replying, seems like you know your bettas. The female is a DTPK. So if I am understanding you correctly if I mix the DTPK female with the VT male (and IF he carries the dt) the f2 will result in 50/50 DTVT and VT's? I am not too concerned about what I get, (although I would like to have an idea). Like I said I can easily find homes for them (I actually now work at my lfs). I am far more interested to see the coloring I am going to get. I am guessing you breed bettas? Well thanks for your input, talk to you.
