Hi Everyone! I am new here. I am setting up a 55 gallon FW tank soon. I am using it to relieve stress. Now my question is what is the best tank for the project? See the poll for choices. Any tips are very appreciated.

Hi petlover516 :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

I picked the Amazonian setup too. :D

Personally I picked the amazonian tank. Slow moving currents, black water and dimly lit = relaxation. Try to pick fish that aren't going to be too aggressive with each other, because that can be quite stressful IMO and for that reason, I would also think that the Goldfish tank would be alright too.

for a 55 gallon tank i would go with a trio of apistos (1m, 2F) a shoal of 50 cardinal tetras and a school of 20 sterbai or schwarzi corydoras

i voted chiclid but i reckon a heavily planted shrimp wirrh lots of rasbora would be nice to look like loads of little shoals of fish and shrimps weaving in and out of the tall thin plants

Overstocked much? -_-

Might be okay with daily water changes.
over stocked? are you using a rule here? sometimes some self working out is better than following the 1 or 2 inch per gallon rule IMO its a useless rule

corydoras produce very little waste, cardinals dont produce much waste for their size either. IMO its better to work out stocking from the waste produced instead of size because its more accurate. i would have no worries about putting 50 cardinal tetras in a 30 gallon because they produce little waste.

I don't know where this idea came from, but it keeps popping up. Corydoras produce as much waste as any other fish of their size. They are hearty eaters and if they are fed properly, they will produce a fair amount of it. It's not particularly visible because it breaks up quickly, but if you keep them in species tanks, you will see that you have to clean the filter media quite often.

you could say the same for ottos and snails. but they dont produce much ammonia (i should have been clearer) because the concentration of the ammonia is little. OM47 wrote an explanation a few weeks ago ill try to find it.

Even if you followed the 1 inch per gallon rule, your stocking list is WAY over!!

your going off topic lol

im not on about using rules. i cant stand them theyre all wrong anyway. and dont compensate for the size of the fish, the waste produced etc.
a reason why it doesnt work.
an 8 inch severum is going to produce more waste than 8 cardinal tetras. yet both take up 8 inches of stocking space. IMO what i suggested would be fine in a 55 uk gallon tank. fish keeping isnt logical anymore its all rules! and thats wrong. your tank is over stocked IMO if:
nitrates rise to 40+ppm in a week
you have ammonia or nitrite readings (ammonia is always present in a tank but our crappy hobby test kits cant pick those small levels up)
your fish cannot move.
