i've read that flakes lose their nutritional value rather quickly. if this is true, how long does it take to happen to a can of fish flakes once the seal is opened?

do pellets lose their nutritional value over time as well? how fast compared to flakes?

Well, when fed, Flakes lose a majoritiy of their nutritional value in about 30 secs after hitting the water, and pellets last a few mins. In a can, Flakes are generally good for the first 6-7 months, then they arnt very nutritional. Pellets are good for over a year ( depending on how you store them).

Hi celaeno :)

If you keep them in a dry, cool place it will help. It's also a good idea to buy a premium brand at an lfs rather than a mass market product at a supermarket or department store. Some brands have an expiration date on them. If your brand does, look on the shelf when you buy it to be sure you're not getting something that's been sitting around for a long time before you get it. :D
