Well, I FINALLY got my hands on a culture. Which is a good thing, because I've got my pair conditioned and the female is going back in the chimney today. I've read a heap of conflicting advice on the net and I'm now in freak out mode.
The culture I have is very small, it's just a plastic jar with about 1/2 cup of liquid in it, teeming with eels, hole in the lid. They are not clumping or crawling up the sides or anything like that. When I got it there was one pinhead-sized greyish-white lump on the bottom. Now there are six or eight of them and a dead eyefly that fell in. Are these a problem?

I think I'm going to have to split the culture, ASAP, because it's tiny. I had some similarly sized containers (8 of them) that I was going to use but I've been reading on the net and apparently everybody uses 1/2 to 1 gallon containers? I don't have anywhere to put them though.

Also, nobody can agree on what culture medium to use, or what to feed them... there are all these recipes on the internet involving different amounts of apple cider vinegar (which I have), water, apple juice, bits of apple... what do I do? The instructions I got with the culture say filter 25% of the liquid (with eels) and use the eels from it per day for 7-10 days, then add a 2cm cube of apple and rest for 2 weeks. I don't think this is going to provide enough eels for a whole spawn, or long enough.

Can anybody help me? I know a lot of people on here use vinegar eels for their first week or two - what works???

I cant for the life of me remember what Netty uses  I know there's Apple cider vinegar, Apple juice, Apples and Dechlorinated water but cant remember what goes where  I'll find out when she's back later.

Have Pm'd you the instructions Laura :good:
