just come back from seeing leona lewis in concert and shes awesome like you wouldnt believe. anyway i went with a vet nurse and i told her about the thread i read about the way to put fish out of their misery.............clove oil or the cruel way that was suggested.

she said that she has on numerous occasions had people come in with their fish in bowls wanting it to be put to sleep by injection, she said that i was a difficult thing to do because fish dont pass away as quick as other animals and its sad to see it.

she thought the clove oil sounded like a good idea and she said she would research it and if it was true then this was an excellent way to stop the misery of the slow dying fish.

i think it shows that so many people really do care about their fish enough to take them to the vets.......even though i wouldnt , to be honest.
what do you think???????

personally i think you'd be better off taking a fish to an aquarium rather than a vet, that way it's free to.

i've never really put down a fish, i always do my best to try and get them better, if not they die naturally.

agree with you but image a goldfish going to the vets, i wonder wot other animals she had to deal with that were out of the norm

I wouldnt do it, I would probably let it die( I of course would try to save it) but if it died the same thing would have happend in nature so, it isnt a big deal( I love my fish, so dont think I dont) fish die because that is what god wants and I cant do anything about it( no matter how hard I try)!

This is an easy way ive heard of to put your fish to sleep. Put your fish in a small container with water and put it in the freezer. This is a good way because no matter how a fish dies it will encounter severe bladder and intestinal pain and suffer for hours, maybe even days before it finally sucumbs. Using the freezing method wont give them that pain.

I must ask, do you feel the same way about your other pets (if you have any, if not its hypothetical)? There wouldn't be meds in nature, but it sounds like you would medicate your fish? (I certainly hope so.)

I just made an emergency after-hours vet visit with one of my rats last Sunday, would do it again in a heartbeat- saved the little guys life, thank goodness. :good:

Maybe I am hypocritical- I don't think I would have made that trip for a fish. Maybe its mostly because I don't think there is much a vet (in this town) could do for a fish- at least not more than I could do with the help of this forum.

To try to say something more directly on topic- I don't know if I would take a fish to a vet- I honestly don't think it would do any good here. There is only one vet in this city who will treat rats, so I doubt any would treat fish anyway. I guess I feel like the fish has as good a chance here, with me trying to help it with the help of this forum. I don't think there is much a vet can do that I couldn't (with the illnesses I have come across so far).

So did I ever actually answer the question?

Oh, and I have euthinized a fish before. A female betta who was fading away due to tuberculosis. Could no longer swim but for short bursts, and couldn't eat anymore, just sit on the bottom lying to one side, with her poor twisted spine. Clearly suffering, poor girl, and if I were her I would have wanted the same that I gave her. A few drops of clove oil and her suffering was over. I hate to think that some would have just let her starve to death, or whatever else would have finally done her in. That would not have been humane.

You posted same time as me, so just in case look at my post above yours.

Um, when I euthed the betta girl (clove oil method), she was dead in less than a minute, with no obvious signs of stress. Even if her last few moments were painful, at least it was short and painful, rather than long and agonizing (freezing).

I medicate my fish and do everything I can to save them but I dont get to upset if they die because what is done is done and if god wanted it to die I couldnt have done anything to stop it. Also, if my other pets were sick or hit by a car, sure I would take them to the vet but it dosent mean taht they would make it, and even if I wanted to, I dont think there is a vet in town that could take care of a fish.

I'm sorry, my wording was unclear. I meant that if one of your other pets were, say, HBC and beyond (I mean BEYOND) help and were not going to make it (but was still barely holding on), would you not have him/her euthed?

yes i would of course, the original part i posted was stating that i wouldnt take a fish to the vet but would use the clove oil method.
FREEZING no chance now that i feel is unexceptable i would want to go qiuckly regardless whether it was painful or not....
wouldnt clove oil numb the pain until the end?????????

Sorry, the question about euth'ing was for kirbensis who said they would not euth a fish- they would let it die, and I was wondering if that would apply to thier other pets. If the question was too off topic then I apoligize.

I agree with you about going quickly. I would like to think that clove oil is painless, though there is controversy, I think in the last euth'ing debate (that I caught anyway- I had to take a break not too long ago) the overall feeling was that clove oil was the least painful, next to blunt force smashing (or decapitation), which I do NOT have the stomach for.

I never really freezed a fish before. I just heard it online. A lot of ppl use the freezing for getting rid of unwanted fish because they dont want to release them into lakes, which is true because you should NEVER release your fish into a lake. I wouldnt freeze unwanted fish, it doesnt take much to just bring them back to the pet store, u might even get store credit.

What have we learned today? If you have unwanted fish, bring them to the pet store.

thats ok i think were all having one of those crazy bad communication moments again
