Hey just thought id share this with anyone who is interested...

For the last week or so i have been looking for an external canister filter to replace my internal interpet pf4 that i have/had in my 55 gallon juwel tank home to 4 juvenile red bellies.

After much time searching the internet, classifieds and local fish/pet stores i decided to buy the filter new rather than used. At least then id have more peace of mind that there was no problems before hand with the filter.

The filter i chose after a lot of thinking was the all pond solutions EF 2000 with the uv light. Mainly because a friend uses 2 of the 2000 models on his 125 gallon tank that houses 2 arowanas and some various other fish and he swears by these filters, plus it is recommended for up to 1000 litre aquariums and because at £59 brand new and posted i simply could not refuse.

I am very pleased to say the filter was delivered next day as stated and i have had it up and running for the last 8 hours or so and i couldn't be happier with it. It's a little on the large side but im fine with that. Was very easy to set up and its very quiet. Also the self prime fiction was easy to do. The water in the tank is a lot clearer already (even with my messy piranhas) which is a good sign....

All in all to anyone thinking about getting an external filter and don't want to spend over the odds i would highly recommend this filter.

Hope this is helpful to someone :)

Congratulations on your new purchase! :)

I would consider getting another after reading coldcazzie's thread in the hardware/equipment section of the forum as when she tested hers it was pumping 900L per hour when full of media. Especially considering that the Red Bellies are very messy fish.

Thank you. :) I have my pf4 not doing anything now so i could use that as well as the APS if needed until i get money for a 2nd external. So far iv noticed a significant change for the better in my tank since connecting the new filter so will have to see how things go :)

Also do you (minnnt) or anyone else know if it will be beneficial to the fish/water in the tank if i was to have the iv light switched on? If yes then should i keep it on or only have or on for a few hours or so per day? Thanks

Have you used mature media in your new filter?

See how it goes mate, if you feel the need to use the pf4 then go for it, can't do any harm, but they do look unsightly and take up a fair bit of room in the tank!

Unsure mate tbh, i think 'vin swords' used one of the APS filters and decided to turn it off but i believe it was because of fears of it interfering with his plant fertilisers?!

Yes i had media off a friend. He said it would be better if i was to use mature media rather than new... Don't know if this is correct but he has been keeping fish for years so went with his advice. I know exactly what your saying about the internal filters, they are horrible looking and yes the pf4 is huge so as it is now i have freed up a bit of space in the tank :)

Ah right ok. I don't have real plants in the tank as i wasn't sure if the piranha would just rip them apart. Seems a bit of a waste then

Haha yes he is. He got me into the hobby and so far i love it :)

you shouldn't have any need to use the uv really. They are good for wild caught fish which naturally live in environments where there are very few pathogens (by this I mean angels or discus which live in water so acidic that few bacteria can survive, and therefore they have a low immune system) but other than that they're pretty much just a waste of electricity! :good:

Good! :) It's a great hobby to have! I think the general concensous is that the UV part is a bit of a gimmick, but i can;t comment as i have never used one with it on. Can't see it doing any harm though tbh :good:

I must admit i wasn't to keen on the idea of fish keeping to start with but now i wish id started sooner.

Hey cazzie, thanks for the reply :) i have it on now but if there is no need for it then il turn it off :)

I have the same filter, had the light on for a couple of weeks, it did nothing, so I turned it off again! Haven't looked back! I even gave aps some feedback that it would be better if all the filters were like the smallest one - came with or without uv, for people who've no interest in using it.

Hello, maybe you can try to buy the led light, which can save a lot power.
I have bought from these sites:BangGood,DX,FP,etc...
They selling much less than 10 dollars, I just update my old LED light with led last month, It works like champion remain now.
Hope these can help you find some high quality and cheap led light:D

Cazzie you make a good point there, if for a lot of people the lights are going to be pretty much useless then i totally agree with you. You should have the option to have with or without the light as you do with the EF1000 model. I might leave a comment on thier site because as i said when it comes to what you get and how it performs for the money you can't go wrong. :)

That's for that fuvny :)
