I don't know, something bugs me about the whole paint fumes thing. I know people who've painted their house and nothing happened, and you said it wasn't anywhere near your room... I don't know, it just doesn't add up to me. Are you sure nothing fell in your tank or got dumped in? Sorry to hear about it though, that really sucks.

yes that sucks alot. but besides the paint fumes..was there any soap or anything near your tank? cause if soap might have been accidently nocked over and leaked into your tank then that would do it for sure.I could have been anything not just the paint fumes cause i kind of think its a bit hard for fumes to come all the way down the stairs and still kill your fish. they would have to be pretty thick fumes.but maybe someone accidently dripped a small drop on your lid and it leaked in but who no's

I very much doubt the paint fumes theory...

3 weeks ago (while we were on holiday) we had walls knocked down and rebuilt - floorboards replaced, wall replastered and then repainted (one wall was the wall behind our 4ft 50gal in the living room... althought the room was ventilated (doors open etc) the painting was only inches from the (covered) tank.

We didn't loose a single fish.

(the builders also have fish - so knew our concerns )

are the video / stereo clocks ok?
my money is with a powercut.

could be by electrocution. your heater and filter might still be working, but have a small current leak into the tank. you might be able to feel a little stinging sensation like touching a 9V battery, but it would be more than enough to kill your fish. i had it happen to some fish in a pond with a sub-pump.

I also have a hard time believing paint fumes did it since it wasn't even in the same room. Was any bug killer sprayed in the room, like Raid? Sometimes I totally forget about the tank when I see a spider and just go get the Raid, then I remember and quickly throw a towel over the tank. There's got to be another reason. Too bad you can't have a complete chemical breakdown of the water and find out what was in it, but of course that would cost alot of money, Lol.

Sorry to hear that . It's happened to me too. The cause of mine was fish Tuberculosis. It is not very detectable and is very contagious. My fish had about an hour to live once they caught it. Sometimes it is in their genes, other times it just happens because of new fish. I hope you find the cause!

it had to be from electrocution. they wouldnt all die in one night from disease, old age, definetly not paint fumes. they must have gotten electrocuted somehow!

what kinds of decorations are in there? I had a shell in with my female betta and it deteriorated and she did from that. Do you have any other animals that could have done something to it?

I'm so sorry to learn about your loss.

There is a disease that could either attack your fish slowly or sweep through a tank like lightning. This is a bacterial infection caused by Columnaris Flexibacter, the same bacteria that causes ordinary finrot.

These bacteria are present in most tanks, but if your fish are strong and have healthy immune systems, they will not be effected. It is usually when they have been stressed and weakened, that they become ill. Some factors that contribute to such stress are high nitrites, uneaten food in the tank, low oxygen content in the water, overcrowding, sudden increase in temperature, aggressive fish in the same tank, or infrequent water changes.

There is no doubt about it, your tank was very definitely overcrowded, and this could have brought this disease on.
