hello there.
can you chaeck through my thread please to see photos of my Betta to determine if he has/had velvet. I have removed everything (decor and gravel) from the tank to ensure less decor for velvet micro organisms to land on, therefore cutting down reinfection risk. The temperature is set at 30 degrees to increase lifecylce and kill in free swimming stage. Terry ( the fish) has gone from grey/pale cream, to purple/yellow as he should be as a mustard gas....the yellow has become very striking, and as he is supposed to be yellow, i can tell if velvet is what is making my corys ill....as the betta had a "swollen, cloudy eye" which has since cleared up. the corys are swimming eratically, and one of them occassionally flicks ( its my panda) so what do you think? ( I havnt put any meds in as I wasn't sure)

Can i ask what you water parameters are...and not just ammoina/nitri/ate..like Ph and hardness. You have a lot of problems in your tanks and im scratching my head why.
a few handsome handsome bettas if i remember correctly.
id love to help solve this problem for you :/
Hope that isnt coming off as rather direct. But it seems like a constant string of problems...and that is not what this hobby is all about.
Cheers :)

Thanks for your concern loraxchick, I too am getting "fed up" with constant problem, Its always some disease or another. The pH is usually between 7.2 and 7.6 only once has it ever gone to 6.8 and that was ages ago. I think my problem is where I am getting most of my stock from, Maidenhead aquatics and pets at home are pretty much where i use, and on inspection of the tanks there never seems to be much problem with maidenhead aquatics, but I try to stay away from stock from pets at home, as they always seem to have ill fish.....signs of whitespot, flicking, sleeping on bottom and clamped fins, so I don't tend to buy from Pets at home, coz I don't trust their fish keeping ability. I wander whether its something I am doing wrong, maybe over feeding, or too much w/c or something. I really don't seem to be getting the hang of this hobby. I am about to give up on tropical fish and change to goldfish but then I don't want to harm any more animals unknowlingly. My amm, nitrate etc, are normal and within limits, 0,0, 10-20 once it hits 20 i do w/c, but whilst the fish are ill i have been w/c 75% everyday, to hopefully cut down on spores etc of the parasite free swimming stage. ( to remove them) as at the moment, there is no gravel, no decor just dechlorinated water in the tank, so i can observe them, their condition and their behaviour freely. the betta, is very gold in colour and I can't decipher whether its his colour or velvet. the panda cory flicks every so oftewn, and they are all darting except the betta. we lost a snail yesterday, about 5/6 month old, and the other two keep playing dead too. the otto is darting
I am continuing with daily w/c, until symptoms dissappear, i turned the temp back to 24 last night, as it has been at 30 for a good few days and i dont want the oxygen level to plummet although the filter has an airation device on it
its a interpet 64 with a PF2 (cycled) filter. we live in asoft water area, i cant measure hardness as i havnt got a kit
any ideas?

If you suspect velvet FULL blackout for at least 3 days. Cannot live without light. Have you shined a flashlight on the fish to check for the characteristic "gold dusting". Even if you cant see it on the betta because of his coloring the other fish seem to be exhibiting the same behavior so should be able to notice on them. Any labored breathing from any of them? also good indication of velvet coupled with the other symptoms youve mentioned.
dont think you can ever do too many waterchanges. Nothing wrong with fresh clean water ever.
Im really scratching my head on your tank situation. I think i agree with you that it is just dodgy livestock and bad husbandry from the shop..shame. Tanks should be a joy to have and maintain not feel like a chore. Seems you are not having any luck and for that im sorry. You are a good keeper as you always ask for advice when needed and it is clear you have their best interests in mind. Hopefully you sort this one out and it is the beginning of better things for your tanks.
all the best
cheers

Hi Loraxchicks. thankyou for your advise. Welost the corys, all of a sudden, and I thought they were improving. The gold dusting may have been evident on 2 of the corys, and I thought the peppered one was starting to show more of the natural colour. Seeing how things developed, I think that all the corys and the betta had velvet. although the betta didnt show any signs other than a bad eye a few weeks ago, and a goldish colour to the top of the head. this gold is going now, and it now looks like faded white scales. Don't know if this is a good sign or not. he isnt keeping still long enough to get a good clear shot og him, or i would post a pic. I took a video of him yesterday and will try post a link
