and by cycled, you started adding ammonia of some sort to the water without fish in, and this allowed the filter to grow a decent colony of bacteria, so it can cope with the fish waste? are you familiar with the nitrogen cycle?

like said above, pets store, especially ones that cover a wide range of pets, are generally out to make a buck, the advice normally is quite bad. a 5 gallon tank is small, but there are a few kinds of fish that would be suited.
