I checked on my variatus platy fry and was shocked to see one of them was getting a small mickey mouse design on his tail. The other ones in the batch are dull like the mother which surprises me. Is this normal for platy's to have mixed breed fry?

Yes, it's completely normal.
I have babies from my red wag tail and some of them are one colour, some red wag tail like mommy and some with mickey mouse markings. Unfortunately they are all red. Yours will probably be all yellow judging on the pictures.

I hope they all survive since they are so beautiful

I found 4 of the Variatus Platy Fry in my tank while 6 were in a breeders trap and I found 3 sunburst platy fry in the tank while 16 were in a breeders trap. I am amazed they all survived since I have an agressive dwarf gourami

They have amazing surviving instincts. The only time you may see fry while small in your tank is if they turn out orange or some bright colour when very young or at feeding time when a little orange head is sneaking out from under a rock and vacuuming huge flakes falling from the parent's dinner

They LOVE the Hikari brine shrimp so I have been feeding them those.

The brine shrimp are fine as a supplement but should not be the only thing you feed. There is no such thing as a single perfect food for fish, any more than there is for people.

I feed them shrimp as a treat but their main food is top fin color enhancing flakes
