Could u use a pond UV light system as a 6watt treats up to like 6000 litres or summit made by tmc. Its just cos they are cheaper then the other ones for aquariums.
cheers

Make sure there are no metal components that could rust. Also go by the wattage for how large a system it could do. SW is different than FW.

Pond UV's are called clarifiers, aquarium UV's are called sterilisers

There is a difference in the volume of contact, pond UV's are for clearing green water only, the path through an aquarium sterliser is that much more narrow exposing the liquid to the UV radiation thus killing pathogens etc

So the short answer is no, I am afraid to say

Actually the only difference there is marketing, either can be used for clarifying or sterilizing. The flow rate determines what the UV kills. It takes longer exposure to kill parasites so the flow has to be less to be a steralizer. As the user determines the flow rate, the user determines what the UV's purpose will be.

The only issue is as crazyelece says is the components used, saltwater is a very corrosive liquid and therefore all parts must be saltwater safe (something that the cheap pond units are not)

ok thats fair thanks for, that but one more question.. my shop can only get in 8w and a 25w not a 16w which wld be fine for my tank does it matter if the bulb is more then the tank needs?

No. The cost of operation and bulb replacement may or may not be excessive so I'd look into that, but otherwise thats a sufficient wattage
