has anyone ever used one of these in a freshwater aquarium and do they work, would it hurt my plants in my aquarium?

Sure they work and they won't hurt the plants, though IMO they are unnecessary.

because of my tap water, the california heat, and my tank getting direct sunlight I will anything to combat algae in the tank. Do you think this will combat the algae like they say it will? I found one that should attach to my from my cannister filter.

any thoughts, why is it unnecessary?

It will destroy mainly free floating algae and this is not normally a problem in home aquaria but it is in ponds where light is 16+ hours per day in the summer
