Can you try a different nitrate kit? For example take the water to your LFS for testing?

How old is your testing kit because they do go out of date. I recently purchased a new one as my old one was giving me funny readings. I have 10ppm of Nitrate in my tap water so I never have a 0ppm reading

Are they any good? I'm interested in 1 because my Cories lost their barbels (I have sand) so I want something that'll kill any bacteria in the water.

they are good at getting rid of algae, but nothing else. actually that's not right, they burn eletricity and bulbs too. but thats all you get for your buck.

you can, and should, control algae with your light regime.

any other benefits are placebic (if that's a word) as there is no scientific backup to it having any benefit at all. indeed the evedence points to them not, actually, being able to do the job they are sold for.
I guess if you like the idea, fine. as its, unlikely to do any harm. however this is no justification for claims it, really, does help your tank.
