First off just want to say hi! I'm a new member and have read through a lot of topics and decided to sign up! looking forward to all discussions regarding livebearers and general aquarium chit chat! :)

now to the point.

I've been looking for a UV steriliser that is a decent price and seemed to have found one. my tank is not massive; say about 25-30 litres maybe more im just spitballing.

The max water flow rate is 800L p/h

Would this be too much for my tank?

Advice is greatly appreciated!

Sam.

I have put this in the wrong section by mistake, was supposed to go in hardware!

It is in the Hardware & DIY section so all is :good:

Not an expert with UV - hopefully someone who is will be along soon!

im noe expert, but 800 lph seems rather a lot for such a small tank. somthing around 200 sounds more reansonable to me. as for the uv im not totally convinced on these kind of products, sound a bit gimmicky to me.

as i say, am no expert so best to wait for somone more in the know to reply.

Obvious question that springs to mind is, what do you want it to do? I'm guessing from what you said that this is a tropical set up, rather than marine.

My initial answer would be to spend the money on something else.

i was thinking this but i've seen some good results as to cleaning the 'misty' tank, and making the water super clear.

yes it is a tropical set up :) I have seen some excellent results as to cleaning up the water and keeping it clear which i'm having trouble with. I do regular water changes and still end up with slighty misty water, i just want really crystal clear water

OK. Makes a lot of sense. I'd still not start with a UV unit though. They're good for green water in ponds, and will probably sort a white bacterial bloom, but won't do much for suspended solids which are usually responsible for the misty water we see. The most important thing about clearing cloudy water is working out why it's there in the first place.

What filter are you running? If you can add a layer of filter floss this often does wonders for clearing a lot of mist from water. Just be aware that it can clog up very quickly. I tend to use mine intermittently as it knocks my flow off more than I'd like.

Other people swear by purigen for crystal clear water, which I haven't gotten around to getting any of yet, but give me time.......

If you do go with a UV unit then make sure that you don't go over the flow rate specified (not likely to be a problem on the 800lph model) and make sure you get an aquarium, rather than a pond one. As the pond ones are really only for green water. To be honest though, I suspect that there are better ways to clear cloudy water.

Ive purchased it anywayfor the money I cant complain. See how it goes after a week or so and check the levels of nutrients etc :)

id be more concerned about the 800lph flow rate in such a small tank. poor little fish are gonna get chucked all over the place surely??

Hopefully, as the OP said, the tank may be bigger than that....Otherwise the unit may not fit in it anyway.

Or, possibly, it may be like a lot of these units, and quote a flow rate that isn't really producable in real life.

Otherwise, it could make an interesting water feature in the living room.

It does say MAX L p/h is 800 so I'm guessing it will be lower :). If it's too strong I will put the old one in and save for a new larger tank! I can't wait to save for one!
