Uv Filter

Hi all,

While searching for a new bulb for my pond filter, i came accross one of these.

Would it be worth while getting a uv light filter for my aquarium? Will it help things?

The main reason i wanted to check was because i don't fully understand how the bactera breakdown process works (amonia, nitrate etc), so i wasn't sure if a uv filter would kill the good bacteria and stop it working properly?

I run an aquaeL unimax 500 external canister filter on my planted tank which houses a UV light which is on 24 / 7. I think it helps break down larger bacteria in the water column which can cause algae issues without affecting you biological balance. My water stats are always spot on, some people would argue that they are not necessary but I believe they can also be beneficial in reducing / eliminating mircoscopic organisms which could cause fish disease etc.
