I have a friend who would give me some media from his filter to help spped up my cycle but, his tank is very badly effected by algae (very very bad), is it safe to use or not, his tank is big, 6 foot long and has only one goldfish left, he is stopping the tank when this fish dies

I wouldn't see why not...algae is not really a life or death situation, it simply proves that he's got too much light and/or not enough elbow grease. What i would do though, is go round to his and have a good look at his tank/filter/media, if at all possible (and if he doesn't mind) do a full water test on his tank water.

Terry.
