Urgent-Need Advice On Coldwater Filter

Basically had large outdoor coldwater tank with very powerful filter. Tank was well insulated but owing to extreme weather conditions had to bring my fish indoors to save their lives and empty the tank. They would certainly have died if the tank froze and glass would probably have cracked too.Fish are now in 2large plastic crates, neither of which is big enough to use the original filter in so I'm doing 50% water changes 3 times a week.Kept the filter in one of the crates but not turned on. Will filter be OK if unused for a few weeks or will bacteria die? Could use the filter in my large tropical tank but will coldwater bacteria survive at 75degrees?Don't want to start major fish-in cycle when fish go back to their tank.

Cold water and warm water bacteria are the same ones. If you allow the filter bacteria to die in the house, you will need to continue those large water changes when you move the fish back outside.

in order to keep the bacteria alive, you will need to continue to provide it with a source of ammonia.

Go for it. I often hang a filter off the front of a tank to keep it going while the main filter for that tank is located on the back. It makes it easy to pull the extra filter off when I need it.

I also keep a spare filter running ( Fluval 1 ) . Very useful in emergencies, or for seedng a new filter if that one is too large or strong ( like in a betta tank for example ).

Since I have an external running my 30 gal, It's a pain to have to shut it off and empty water and muck from it to seed new filters, so having a small cannister with sponges sitting in the tank 24/7 is really useful for me.

Thanks everyone for taking time to reply, especially at Christmas. Coldwater filter is now running in my large tropical tank. With a pleco in there you can't have too much filtration anyway!
