I'd really appreciate some help on this one.

Collected my new Betta today; he is a violet one. Just noticed that his gill movements are very rapid, which I didn't notice earlier today (he's been in his tank for about four hours. The tank has cycled, and he's come from the same ph as ours. I introduced him into the tank very slowly (he's its slow occupant, of course) and he has had nothing to eat today. I did not put on the light until he'd been in the tank for two hours.

When I look at his gills the inside (as he opens them) looks very dark, but this may be normal for violet Bettas; never had one before so I don't know.

I guess I'm a bit twitchy because he was my second choice: one I got to my LFS today to collect the one I had chosen a week ago, I was told that it had died.

Thanks in advance.

I've turned his light off, in case that helps. It looks to me as though it might be stress, because he keeps making 'attacking' movements at his own reflection. Trouble is, in my experience all tanks have a kind of reflective effect. Is this something they just get used to? I am worried about how dark it looks inside his gills though.

It is normal all males have what you call is a beard and he is just getting use to the tank so it is no big deal just leave him alone and let him do his thing and he will be fine

Thanks so much for the reassurance.

+1 on the above. I wouldnt worry too much, Hes just flaring at his own reflection, Hes in a new tank so just keep an eye on him, Could you do a water test so we can see your stats? That would be great :)

ph 8.0 (same as my LFS); ammonia and nitrate 0.0; nitrates 0.25.

Thanks for the answers folks :)

Thanks again everyone. Lorenzo is much happier this morning, even with the light on, and has taken a little food.

That's good to hear. It does take them a while to settle sometimes,- they can even go off their food for days. the fact that Lorenzo is eating is a very good sign :good:
