Wow you must be one of the lucky ones then. I've heard horror stories about male bettas tearing females apart when housed together.

really?

honest to god, they all swim around together....infact the females mostly follow the male!!! he loves it :D

the only fish i have that don't get along are...

The Red finned Black Shark......he is cool but chases the 5 barbs about sometimes. but to be honest it keeps them in check, before i had the shark the barbs used to chase the plattys and anything else they could (apart from the angel :D )

And the Angel is fine with ALL other fish, except when i try to give him a mate

Yes the general rule is you should never keep females and males together, unless they are from the same litter and they grew up together I suppose. You got really lucky. Did you introduce them at once? And I'm also surprised the barbs don't nip the angels fins... they often prove far too tempting for the barbs to resist. :p

nope and the barbs are fully grown.....trust me this Angel is a little B%*&$*d. He has flawless fins, the barbs would be stupid to try and bit him.....he'd eat them

I got the Male betta 3 weeks ago. and the females a few days ago. all from the same shop though, perhaps i've just got lucky.

Wow. If I tried to do that I'd end up with a tankful of dead/injured and very unhappy fish. :p Lol this is inspiring me to take a crazy risk and put together an oscar and a feeder guppy (maybe they'll be the best of friends)

I'm joking of course

Just a thought if you are really trying for a mated pair of angels... You could ask around at the lfs in your area and ask who is breeding them - perhaps you could find someone willing to sell you a matched/mated set. That still leaves you with the single male (bachelor for life if he was mine) and he could be the one to move to the second tank. Are you sure that you want to raise angels? They are wonderful but you will need space for the developing family and what will you do with all the young?

If they did breed, once the young were big enough i'd take them to my LFS.

I also dare not put the bachelor in the 2nd tank as i think he'd have a go at my Bettas.

guess i have some tough choices to make. Breed a pair of Angels (buy 6 youngesters or something) by selling my angel :-( or keep the tank as it is.

My breeding pair of Angles acted exactly like that just after they first bred, went on for about a week after that they where fine again.

really?

this morning the new angel doesn't look good, keeps swimming upside down and resting on the bottom. doesn't look good

Yeh, the female did get a battering at one point but carried on giving the male as good as she got, at times they would hit the gravel so hard it would scatter every where.

I just put melaflex(spelling?) in the water to keep infection at bay as they both had allot of damage to their fins.

After about a week they calmed down, touch wood nothing like that has happen since.

I have read somewhere, cant remember where though that is is a way of the female testing the males strength(or visa-versa) to see the he/she is an adequate mate.

David is right. If you want to breed your favorite male angel, you need to get at least 3 other adults. Put all of them into a new tank(or old tank completely redecorated) at the same time. The territorial aggression will be gone, and they will get along much better. Matter of fact, If you get a female or two in there with him, odds are you'll have a pair in a matter of a couple days. MOST of the time, when I've put adults in a tank together like that, I see a pair form within the first couple hours, so be sure to watch them closely at first. And just so you know, it IS possible to sex angels before they spawn, with about 90%+ success. The angels do have to be sexually mature though, and be showing their breeding vents. The female has a larger vent, longer and wider, and if the ovipositor is showing, it is very tube like, and wider mouthed than the male's genitalia. His vent will be smaller, and his "tube" will be very pointed, with a very small visible opening. Now I have been fooled a couple times by small vented females, but it's very effective in sexing a group of young breeders. I hope that helps some, and good luck, oh and DONT GIVE UP! Get you some adults and go for it! Where do you live? I have about 15 extra adults, would give you a female..... :D

if yuo can look at two angels or more in the same tank and they are the same size you will notice a greater distance between the front long finy things and thier anal fin on the females coz they carry eggs i have sexed many . hiwever to break a nasty fish with perspex with smallish holes in it to allow the fresh tank water through works ..devide him or her off for a weak if they get scanky on your fish again then loickemup for 2 wks and so on . it works most the time .....i cant see the point in getting 6 then when you get your pair you will have the some prob you have now ... wot to do with the other four???? the mind boggles
