Guys im in need of urgent help please!
Tested my water earlier after returning from holiday and my Ammonia level is 8pmm.

What can i do? i have fish in there and really want to get this down a few people have said do a 90% water change....

Help please!!!

Definately 90% water change immediately. Test again in an hour, if the level are still high then do another large water change, somewhere between 50-90% again, use your judgement.

Ensure you dechlor the new water and try to get temp as close as you can.

great i think i was kind of lucky as before i went away i moved some fish to a hospital tank as they had white spot which seemed to of clear up but now the levels are sky high.

So 90% and leave it and then do another tommorow is that right??

You may need to do more than 1 tonight, depends on what the reading are after the change.

1. Do a 90% change
2. Wait 1 hour before testing to ensure the new water has properly mixed with tank water.
3. If the test comes back high, do another water change.

Great! ill do that asap tonight, but 1 question

when i clean all the gravel is it best to rough all the gravel up so all the water goes dark or just stab at the gravel as the problem is i didnt clean the gravel when we 1st set the tank up 5weeks ago.

You set it up 5 weeks ago? have you heard of cycling?

What are your water stats PH, Ammonia we know 8.0, Nitrite and Nitrate ?

As for the gravel thing I do not know what's best as I have always had sand but as far as i have read just agitate it a bit do not stir it up to much

Yes we cycled for 2 weeks as we were told by lfs, wish we came on here 1st, but abit late now.

Ill get water change done now and post up results after

I guess by your response you know the local fish shop miss advised you on cycling dont worry its a common thing this forum hears it all the time.

So that maybe the reason for the Ammonia spike be honest I am not sure were you are in the cycle process your water stats will tell us more.

In the mean time it maybe worth giving this a bit of a read:

doing water change as we speak will update soon, thnks everyone

Hey guys,

I did a 90% water change last night and left it 1 hour and tested again but Ammonia was still sky high.....

What shall i do now? The ammonia was up arond 6-8ppm again.

although the water is alot clearer now, the ammonia is still high shall i do another this evening, as im at work at the mo....

You are fish in cycling so you need to do as many water changes as you need, in order to get your ammonia and nitrite reading down to zero.

Be prepared for a lot of water changes. In the mean time search for the fish in cycling instructions which are on the forum somewhere.
