HELP! Just bought a new external filter and it doesn't come with filter material. In the instruction manual it says " Fill the baskets with your filter material of choice ". What material should i use?? I have some fine sand will this do? Or if not what else can I use? Thanks

what make and model of filter is it? i presume it did come with sponges? just nothing to fill the baskets?

in my Eheim filter which has 2 baskets i use pre filter in the bottom basket (smooth ceramic tubes which trap large particles of dirt and can be washed and reused forever). in the top basket i use biomax (rough ceramic tubes with lots of little tiny holes in for bacteria buid-up)

in my fluval 204 which has 3 baskets i have the same, but with the middle basket filled with filter floss, which cleans out a lot of the fine dirt to stop it clogging the pores on the biomax.

if i need to add carbon (after medicating for example) i just add a bagfull of carbon to one of the higher baskets.

when i first started out and was a bit poor to buy expensive media(which most of it is) i used gravel in the baskets. small sized gravel is best. it traps dirt and builds up lots of bacteria on all the surfaces,(thats why UGF's used to be so popular)

hope that helps :good:

Ibble,

My signatures a little on the large size width wise (but usually ok due to the overall size), but that is a bit of a biggy!

sig rules here - saves having your knuckles rapped by a MOD.. ;)

EDIT: nice one ibble :good: ;) ..
