So if I can get rid of the plec and clowns fish and do a half of the water change? Would the swordtail recover?

You will need to do 50% water change every day if not twice a day. It is really important to know your ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte readings during the cycling process. You want to keep the ammonia level as close to 0 as possible. If you keep your water well your fish will be able to fight what you see as these patches.
I urge you to research the needs of the fish you would like to keep in this tank. You need to know what minimum tank size they need, compatibily with other fish, whether they are schooling fish, what level of the tank they mostly keep in....

A lot of people buy the API master test kit. I have one by Nutrafin. As long as it is the test tube kind you're good! Don't get the test strips though, they are inaccurate!

American $? So would be like £13 for me..
How much was the one you bought rummy???

if you can't afford a full kit, you can get them singlely. Right now, the most important ones are for ammonia and nitrite. Check ebay if you have to

I've answered in your pm, but in case someone else is curious, I think I paid around $30 Canadian Dollars at Petsmart. I like this kit, it is easy to use.
