Today while doing my weekly maintenance one of my sunset platys got too close to the syphon tube i was using to drain some water from my tank and rubbed up against it. at the time i was not watching the tank i was looking at the bucket as it was near full. when i felt the fish hit the tube i immediately looked to see what happened. as i did i could see a small piece of my fish sinking to the bottom, and the platy went in to hiding.

upon inspection i cannot see any obvious signs of damage: however one of his gill covers seems unusually red.

is he going to be ok? is there anything i can do to help him out?

My tank is a 55 gal stocked with 3 sunset platys 3 male guppies and 5 neon tetras.

Nice choice of fish ;) . A fish keeper after my own heart. The best thing you can do is keep a close eye for any sign of infection and hope it recovers!
If you notice anything unusual developing then maybe use an anti-bacterial treatment as a precaution.

Interestingly...did you mean 55 Litres instead of 55gallons because that would be huge for that amount of fish!!!

Make sure the platy is swimming ok as sometimes you can damage there swim bladder.
The red gill as it always been red or just after the accident it went red.

Once my red wag platy got stuck in the hole in the end of the plant pot in the tank and it cut all the top and underneath of it.
I just put a bit of stress coat in the tank as it seemed a bit stressed, and a bit of the medicine to prevent disease and its healed up nicely.
I think as long as you dont fuss over it too much it will be fine!
:)
I was scared incase it was going to die, but she seems fine now and is pregnant too!

yes it is a 55gal tank. its only 3 months old im trying to take it slow and not stock it too fast. and its mainly for my 2 younger kids (8yo girl and 5yo boy). so i dont need anything fancy just some peacefull colorful fish for the family.

any way he seems to have recovered somewhat. a few hours later he was playing with the other fish not 100% but out and about. i use aquarium salt at 1tbs per 5 gal
so i hope that will help stave off infection.

Update:

since my platys little accident, it turns out the he is a she and has dropped fry. :hyper: i didnt even know until sunday afternoon while staring at the tank i noticed an extremely small fry hiding around the back of the tank and another hiding around a plant.

they seem to be around two weeks old judging by size and comparison to other photos i found here on this forum.
now i have them in a netted breeder with some floating plants to provide my fry "piece of mind".

aww bless, im so glad its alright after all, but do still keep an eye on her just incase, not to be the bearer of bad news ,but i lost 2 plays just after giving birth to what i thought was TB so just keep a look out xxx
