I've had a Chinese algae eater for a couple of years now and he is becoming increasingly aggressive towards the swordtail who is with him. The tank is too small for him and I'd like to give him away. In my experience, pet stores around me do not take good care of the fish; there are often dead fish floating around in the tanks, and the tanks themselves are very dirty. I don't have any family members or friends who have fish tanks and I don't really know anyone that is interested in the fish hobby. I want what's best for him and my swordtail but I'm not sure what to do with him.

Try posing an ad on Petfinder, Craigslist or social media. You might be able to find someone there.

Any tips for posting on social media? I'm not sure where to start

You might try one of the buy, sell, trade facebook groups. Just say that the SAE no longer fits into your set up, a person would need X amount of gallons tank, set a rehoming fee, and say you are willing to meet somewhere.

Post that it is a Chinese Algae eater; SAE (Siamese algae eater) are different fish entirely-peaceful when adults unlike the CAE.

Or put it under “Free Stuff”. Also check with your LFS to see if they will take them.

I found this on ebay, would this be a good place to list him?

Probably not. You would have to ship the fish, and there are lots of complications with that.

I would say Craigslist is your best bet.

The tanks at my LFS are dirty, cramped, and often contain dead bodies of fish
Ah, that’s a bummer man. :/

Ok, I made a craigslist post:

In the post you need to mention if it is free or for sale. (And if so, what’s the cost?)

Also I would post one in the “free stuff” area. I frequently look in the free stuff genre for free fish/tanks, as do lost of people. (Assuming it is free)

Ok, just updated the post so that it states that he is free. When I was picking out a category, it says that pets are not allowed in the "free stuff" category, which is why I didn't choose it. Am I actually allowed to though?

There are MANY tropical fish related groups on Facebook so that might be an option.
Didn’t recognize you man.

Ah, ok. Now that you say that, I do remember no posting pets in free stuff. Just make the “price” $0.
