Today I found my neolamprologus brichardi lying dead at the bottom of the tank. he was light light brown but when I found him he was a very dark brown. I took him out to examine him and searched for any white spots, possibly ich, but there was nothing checked for a dark spot behind eye. Nothing. however it did have a very unusual mark. there was a medium size light brown patch on its back roughly 2mm behind the eye. My book says its a fungal death because of the dark colours but I believe it maybe something else as when I looked closely at the tank there were millions of white dots which i soon found looked like tiny worms. I eventually narrowed it down to panaria worms or Hydra but I'm not sure if these are deadly. Please could someone help me to find the cause of death and please tell me if this is contageous :-(

Planaria are not deadly to fish, but they are an indication of over feeding and poor water quality. What are your water parameters?

I check my ph every day and thats 7.2 but the others were a 1 off. when i checked them thoug they were perfect, nitrite 0 nitrate 23 mg p/l Kh forgot t0 take note. Gh was medium soft and Cl2 was 0. unfortunately I couldnt check No1 (ammonia) so that may be the problem but I do do weekley water changes

Tank size? Full stocking? Details of how weekly maintenance is performed? How much do you feed and when? Full range of test readings should include ammonia, can you get a reading for that?

Almost everything in your tank will take advantage of a dead fish. Just because you found something on the fish body does not automatically mean it was there while it was alive. However, it could be a parasitic infection, do any of the other fish have discoloured patches anywhere? Heavy breathing? Acting differently?

Its been a while since and I did a huge tank cleaning. She only has 1 tankmmate (a tiny firemouth juvinial abot 2cm long and he hasn't been showing any strange signs. The brichardi was also a juvi about the same size and they get along amazingly. Unfoetunately I'm not at home so I can't measure it but its roughlY 100L I feed them 1ce a day in the morning, I feed them tetramin tropical flakes and frozen tubifex as a treat
