They have an amazing selection of freshwater and saltwater fish, live rock, and basically everything you could ever need. They're a bit overpriced, but not too badly, and that's just because they're not a chain. All their fish are healthy and colorful - that thing people are always talking about, how fish don't have their natural color in the store because they're stressed? Doesn't apply to this place. I've never seen a stressed fish, and only once have I seen a dead one.

Basically : they have a fish department just to say it's there. They don't even have people that work in the fish department. At least, none that I've ever seen. Their fish are in terrible conditions and they know absolutely nothing about them. I went in to look at their bettas once, and the bettas were being kept in those tiny cups - without lids! - And they all had either fin rot, dropsy, or some kind of fungus. I pointed this out to someone, and they shrugged and said, "They always look like that."

Comments: Felt I had to separate knowledge and friendliness - Freshwater, Salt Water, Cold Water, reptiles - LOTS of supplies. Probably 50 salt water tanks and I guess 150 freshwater tanks. You can get some very good large tank prices at this shop and good selections.

Knowledge: Depends on which employee you speak with- I'd give it an 8 overall.
Cleanliness: 6 Lots of algae in the tanks.
Variety: In store: 5-6 due to small size and not a lot of room for tanks, but they will order anything you request. So overall-10.

Comments: This store is working to improve some things, which is always nice to see. I find them to be expensive, which I think is true of all local small stores. When I can I support them because I believe in what they are doing. When it comes to big items, I just cannot afford to get these from there. Their fish are fairly expensive as well.

Comments: This store used to be my favorite in the area. I'm sad to say it has declined greatly in quality. They have reptiles, small mammals, birds, oddities such as scorpions and tarantulas, and puppies as well as fresh and saltwater fish. They have reptiles that I do not believe should be sold, such as large desert tortoises. Those animals are not bred, they must be removed from their natural environment, and they do not do well in captivity. Their cages in the store are grossly inadequate. The quality of their tanks has declined greatly. There were dead fish all over the place, in both fresh and saltwater the last time I was there. Several tanks had fish with Ich, and they had not been quarantined from the other fish. They give bogus advice in order to make fish sales. Their staff can be rude and argumentative. The one saving grace about this location is they will make custom measurement glass aquariums, but due to the severe decline in quality on many levels, I doubt I would take advantage of this service.

For a big box store, this place actually isn't too bad. Their fish selection is wanting, but they do have a small saltwater selection. They carry most of the super common varieties except guppies, which amazed me. Their tanks are always clean and their fish always look healthy and I've only noticed dead fish on rare occasions. The staff here seems to be somewhat educated, but they still don't understand the nitrogen cycle and will give you erroneous information. If you've already done your research and are just looking for a common fish, this place is ok to buy from.

I was very impressed with this store. Their selection of both fresh and saltwater organisms was quite large considering the size of the store. Their cichlid selection is superb. Overall I was really, really impressed with this place. Their selection is absolutely staggering. Considering the size of the place, their fish are quite well kept. They have quarantine tanks on each row for sick fish. While I did see some deaths, considering the enormous size of this place the amount of death was quite low. Overall their fish were healthy, and they carry both fresh and saltwater varieties. They have a gigantic variety of aquariums to choose from, and they do custom orders as well. My one bone of contention with this place was one of their staff touting a new cycling potion to me, promising me that it was cycle a tank within 3 days. I do not believe that is possible, but on the other hand he was extremely knowledgeable about fish. All of their staff were courteous and helpful. Excellent store.

This is a local shop run by one person we call the fish Nazi (he's a Seinfeld fan) His selection isn't huge due to the fact that he special orders your fish for you. He says he doesn't like to have a lot of homeless fish lol. His knowledge is amazing and when I go there he will sit and educate me for at least an hour. I always learn something. He will not sell you fish without first testing your water, he does not offer a 14 day guarantee because he believes it puts a price on a fish's life (hence fish nazi) He will go through with you every fish in your tank to make sure they all get along yes I know mine don't but I started at Petsmart. He also runs a 24 hour emergency help line for all questions. He does not have any employees don't know how he does it but that way he knows all his customers by name and knows their tanks. He gives every loyal customer discounts. It is a wonderful store and worth my 2 hour drive.

If you are a SW hobbyist then Miami, FL is your city. Most Miami LFS deal almost exclusively with SW. Those who enjoy FW and planted tanks, have more of a challenge ahead of them. This store is not bad. They get their stock, I believe either Thursday or Friday. I have seen some beautiful bettas, including a 50% giant once, but they are really over-priced and their quality is not higher than the chain stores above. A $1.29 serpae beats a $2.99 serpae any day. SW staff is knowledgeable, FW staff is more difficult. Again, knowing what you want will put you at an advantage. They have a great selection of wood, and about 10 years ago, I used to buy a lot of plants from there, but their selection is not as extensive as it used to be.

Typical Petsmart regarding selection. Have "dwarf" platies and some unusual tetras once in a while. Cleaner than most. Avoid purchasing fish on Thursdays. That is their stock day. Wednesdays are much better, most fish will have been there for at least 1-2 weeks, depending on the species, since corporate is now ordering for the stores. All the stock purchased from this store are doing great and still in my tanks, including infamous breeding cherry barbs. Otos are in particularly good condition. For plants, come on Thursdays and take advantage of new arrivals. Limited selection, but they have given me freebies especially with crypts. They're usually unpacked by early afternoon, sometimes mid-morning if the shipment is small. Ignore staff, though there is a sweet girl there who is knowledgeable, but research before you buy. Some very good deals to be had.

The fish selection is alright. Have seen some lovely Blue rams, guppies, and rummy-nose tetras. Do not buy fish on Tuesdays, that is their stock day. Buy fish either on the weekend or on Monday. Selection is more limited but, they would have been properly acclimated. My serpaes, and C. anaeus are from this store. If I get Rummy-nose, it'll possibly be from here. Buy plants on Tuesdays, especially every other week in the afternoons. Have come away with some lovely plants (Glossostigma, Pennywort, Marsilea quadrifolia, A. reineckii, various cryptocorynes, water sprite, egeria densa, bacopa, etc). It's a crapshoot, but diligence pays off. Staff not brightest. Didn't know that albino corys and bronze corys were both C. aneaus. Notorious for trying to sell Non-aquatic plants. Have a lovely selection of Aluminum plant, very cheap, buy for a nice North window and keep it in a pot! Bought one a while back and gave to a friend, a nice gift. Again, know before you buy.

Ocean Blue's sister store, Aquaria is a slight cut above Ocean Blue. The variety is increased slightly, all the old stand bys are present but the slightly larger space is used to have a few tanks with less commonly seen fish. The same comments about Ocean Blue's selection of equipment and supplies go here as well. You can get about 75% of the way to completion but will need to go to one of the supermarts to finish it off. The store itself is immaculate and the tanks are well maintained. The staff is friendly and eager to help but much like at Ocean Blue they do not go the extra mile and ask the one question I'd love to hear and I think is important, "What kind of tank do you have?" The staff is knowledgeable and didn't go into cardiac arrest at the mention of a sand bottom. A very nice looking LFS but again not your one stop shop. Still, this is where I buy all my fish if possible.

A fresh and saltwater store Ocean Blue is an interesting LFS. Their livestock selection is average, if its common and popular they have it. Occasionally you will get luck and score an oddball but not too often. They do have a huge number of corals for sale and live rock. The store is kept clean and so are the tanks. I've only see deaths in the neon/rummy nose tetra tank and few at that. Their equipment stocking is rather scattered, if you were starting a tank you could get almost everything you needed but there are going to be some key omissions like heaters or sinking foods. There's also no freshwater decor offered aside from substrate and live plants. Even if you like the shop you won't be able to avoid trips to the big superstores nearby to fill in the holes. The staff is personable and willing to help but not particularly interested in what you're doing. I've repeatedly bought two or three neons with little mention that they're schooling fish and seen other key questions not asked. The staff is hit or miss on the knowledge. Nothing that will get your fish killed but details like panicking when I said I had a sand substrate without inquiring what kind of sand. Overall it's a run of the mill shop but it can't be a one stop LFS.

This is why chain stores get a bad rap. The store stocked only your common fish. Their hardware selection was poor with few of the large name brands and mostly Top Fin level brands. Their gear was tossed on the shelves with little to no organization and hadn't been cleaned up in a long time. The tanks themselves were a wreck, algae, dead diseased and dying fish, decor that had been thrashed and not repaired. I can't comment on the staff because I couldn't find them.

Contrary to the stereotype in US aquarium forums my local Petsmarts are not hell holes where every fish is diseased and dying and the help will tell you a fancy goldfish is a great tank mate for a betta. My local Petsmarts are all freshwater only but their selection is top notch, not only offering many different kinds of fish but also different maturities of some of the larger varieties. Their biggest benefit in my book is a healthy variety of the hardware you need, tanks, heaters, filters, media, substrates, decor, air pumps and accessories they've got it all The tanks are clean but sparse and I saw no diseased fish but a handful of deaths. In 50+ tanks though a half dozen dead fish isn't awful. The staff is rather indifferent to your presence and has only a basic knowledge of fish keeping. These stores are great for buying hardware but make sure to check online before you go, in the stores a 100w visitherm stealth is $31.99, online it was $15.99, bring in a printout like that and they'll match the price no questions asked.

Seriously, never shop for fish at the Augusta Petco. When they first opened they were right up there with Bob's. Now you walk into the fish area and the tanks look horrid. I've gone in there multiple times to find every goldfish either dead or dying, the saltwater tanks completely filthy, and countless dead fish just left in the tanks. The tank they keep all the plants looks like they just dumped them in. And they keep up price tags for plants and fish who haven't been in stock for over a month.
The odd thing about all of this is that the rest of the animals in the store are kept in top condition. Just the fish area is appalling.

Comments: This is THE place to buy fish and plants in Champaign, IL. They appeal to the college crowd who just want pet bettas, but they really treat you awesome if you know what you're talking about. Some of the staff know me by name and give me free Salvinia minima. They are a bit pricey on supplies, but sometimes I'll throw them a bone, I understand they need to make money. One of the few places where they give as much attention to FW as they do SW, and Plants, which is very rare. They are also open to suggestions. They mislabeled C. pygmaeus as C. habrosus. I pointed that out and the next time I go, it's correctly labeled. By far, the best Harlequin rasboras I have ever seen or purchased at a store.

Staff is very unhelpful. They know absolutely nothing, which I discovered when they advised a lady with a new tank to come back next week and buy 2 Bala sharks for her 10g tank, as it will cycle in a week. They also are overpriced in some areas. Not a good store, but it is about the only one we have( many have closed down), so I have to deal with it.

Comments: the best mom and pop store I've found yet. Large fish area with smaller dog/bird/cat section. they have 2 125g tanks set up with a great selection of live plants. The staff are all true fish lovers and very informative. They are known to have nice 10% off sales, and the last time I was in there got a few bonus tetras when I asked for 10 after buying plants, a light and ghost shrimp. Very clean place, the floor was freshly mopped last time I was in there.
