HI Ihave noticed some odd looking creatures in my fish tank They don’t appear to be fry of any sort and the fish don’t eat them so not daphnia. I was wondering if anyone would have any idea what they might be? :-(

They seem to like being on the surface of the water when it is dark, but when you put the lights on in the morning they head for the bottom the tank and hide in the stones.

It is very hard to describe what they look like. to the naked eye they look like small greyish dots about 2mm in size but if you look at the through a magnifying glass they appear to be clear with a few veiny lines almost round in shape. No definite head / body, no wing cases, possible legs or antennea but magnifying glass i have not really strong enough to determine.

Have you bought any new plants recently?

I did the same and thought i had an outbreak of some sort of bugs....turned out those little bugs were small snails which ended up multiplying,

I just give em a little squish and my betta eats the leftovers...he loves em

HI Bugsvile thanks for your reply but they're not baby snails had a problem with them once before. Go so bad had to do a complete tank change and start again  Realy hoping i dont have to the same to get rid of this problem :-(

Look around the forums there is a great critter i.d. thread. It is very unlikely they will do harm but always best to double check just in case.

just because you had a massive infestation of snails does not mean you have to strip a tank, if you have a snail infestation your over feeding.
