Unhappy 6" Gold Fish -- Dying?

 I have heard and read numerous times that there internal organs will grow which will so much that there ribcage will crush.

Are you telling me thats wrong?

It was a theory that someone thought of, and was swiftly proven wrong.

Yeah I digress now... It's a myth that commonly circulates forums and I have heard it alot. It sounded reasonable to me, but upon doing some further research on it after signing off on the forums yesterday, I have written it off as a myth.

Which means that this fish is probably just suffering some ammonia poisoning, which is reasonable enough.

i went to college to study aquatic biology!
no living fish can out-grow its own body...its just not possible.
yes after a while a fish will stop growing...but so ill its insides!
i have studied carp for a long time.
im also an angler and like to study fish in my spare time.
a goldfish can be kept in a 20 gallon tank...its not reccomended but it can be done so long as its moved into a larger tank when its grown bigger.
they are the biggest waste producing fish going so a big filter is needed! without a doubt!
they are greedy fish and will beat any other fish to the food.
being in the carp family they are messy fish!
and wont hesitate to mess up any tank to find food on the bottom.
up-rooting plants, bogwood, gravel, u name it...they will re-arrange it all to get food.
i dont like keeping them in small tanks.
they are pond fish really!

Try big water changes of 50% every other day to keep levels of toxic ammonia etc down. A hex tank may have the "right" number of gallons but is the wrong shape for a large fish as it doesn't have the room for them to swim properly. As a temporary measure, why not move Dennis to one of those large transparent plastic crates with lids which you can get from hardware stores for £10 or less. I use them for hospital tanks and to keep my outdoor baby rudd inthe house in this freezing weather. They make great cheap tanks! If Dennis recovers in a large crate, get him a big 3ft tank
